Bed-in-a-box mattresses are compressed, rolled and vacuum-sealed at the factory. That state is designed for the journey from factory to bedroom, not for storage. Every day the mattress spends rolled up, the foam cells stay deformed under load. Unbox within a reasonable window and they recover completely. Leave it for months and the risk is that some of that deformation becomes permanent — the mattress never reaches full loft, or a section stays firmer or lower than the rest.
WHAT THE BRANDS ACTUALLY SAY. Manufacturers state their own limits, and they vary. Most bed-in-a-box brands advise unboxing promptly and many publish a specific outer limit measured in weeks or a small number of months. Some publish nothing at all. Because the number differs by brand and by foam type, check the setup card that came in your box or the brand's own setup page before you plan to leave one sealed. Treat any figure you find on a third-party site as unverified.
THE PRACTICAL RULE. If you can unbox it in the first few days, do. If you are moving house or the bedroom is not ready, a few weeks sealed is the range most brands treat as acceptable. Past that you are gambling on recovery, and a mattress that fails to fully expand because it sat boxed for six months is not a manufacturing defect — brands treat improper storage as an owner problem, and warranty documents commonly exclude damage from improper handling or storage.
HOW TO STORE IT IF YOU MUST. Keep the box flat and horizontal, not standing on end, so the roll is not bearing its own weight on one edge. Keep it indoors at normal room temperature: heat accelerates foam breakdown and a freezing garage makes foam brittle and slow to recover. Keep it dry — a damp garage or basement risks mould in the packaging before you ever open it. Do not stack heavy items on top of the box.
WHAT HAPPENS IF IT WAS BOXED TOO LONG. Unbox it and give it more time than usual, in a warm room, with nothing on it. Warmth is the main lever: cold foam expands slowly, and a mattress that looks under-inflated after a few hours in a cold room often finishes the job overnight once the room warms up. Walking gently across it can help release trapped compression. If after several days a section is still visibly lower than the rest, contact the brand — but be honest about the storage time, because that is the first thing they will ask.
ONE THING THIS DOES NOT AFFECT. Your trial period usually starts at delivery, not at unboxing. If you are storing the box, you may be burning trial days you cannot get back. Check the brand's return policy for when their clock starts before you decide to leave a mattress sealed for weeks.
