Sleep Calculators

Quick, science-backed tools for the questions our readers ask most: when to go to bed, how much sleep you owe yourself, how to beat jet lag, and which bed actually fits your room.

Guide

Which calculator should you use?

Match the tool to your question

  • Choosing a bed size for a room or a couple: the mattress size calculator.
  • Picking a bedtime that lets you wake between sleep cycles: the sleep cycle calculator.
  • Working out how much sleep you have missed across a week: the sleep debt calculator.
  • Setting age-appropriate bedtimes for children: the kids sleep calculator.
  • Shifting your schedule before or after crossing time zones: the jet lag calculator.
  • Estimating pillow height from your sleep position and shoulder width: the pillow loft calculator.

How to get useful results

Enter real numbers rather than ideal ones — your typical wake time on a workday, the actual room measurements with furniture in place, or the hours you really slept last week. The output is only as accurate as the inputs.

Treat each result as a starting point. A bedtime estimate assumes an average sleep cycle length, a size recommendation assumes standard mattress dimensions, and a loft estimate still needs a few nights of home testing.

Limitations

Calculators give general estimates from the numbers you enter. They are planning aids, not medical advice, and they cannot account for health conditions, medications or individual differences.
