Overheating at night is one of the few sleep complaints with a genuinely mechanical fix. Your core temperature has to fall to initiate and maintain sleep, and a bed that traps heat blocks that. But the market sells four very different solutions at four very different prices, and most people buy the expensive one before trying the cheap one.
**Passive: bedding and mattress construction.** The cheapest intervention. Percale cotton, linen, or bamboo sheets move heat and moisture far better than sateen or microfibre. A plastic-backed waterproof protector will undo everything else you do — swap it for a cotton or wool-terry protector with a breathable membrane. On the mattress itself, coils and latex move air; thick all-foam comfort layers do not. If your bedroom sits above 70°F, fix the room before you buy anything for the bed.
**Cooling covers and phase-change fabrics.** These feel cold to the touch and genuinely help at sleep onset, when your body is dumping heat. They do not remove heat all night — once the fabric reaches your body temperature, it is just a fabric. Worth having; not a solution on its own for someone who wakes at 3 a.m. soaked.
**Air-based systems.** A bedside unit pushes conditioned air through a hose into a sheet or under the covers. Air systems warm quickly as well as cool, need no water maintenance, and are the least expensive route into active temperature control. They cool by evaporating your sweat and moving air rather than by chilling the surface, so the sensation is different — closer to a very well-aimed fan than to a cold surface.
**Water-based systems.** A chiller circulates temperature-controlled water through a pad or cover on the mattress. Water carries far more heat than air, so these hold a target temperature more precisely and work well for people who need real, sustained cooling. The trade-offs are maintenance (distilled water, periodic cleaning to prevent biofilm), pump noise, and price. Subscription-based systems add tracking and automation on top; subscription-free chillers give you the temperature control without the recurring cost.
**Matching the system to the problem.** Hot at sleep onset only: passive bedding plus a phase-change cover. Hot all night, every night, in a cool room: a water system. Different temperature preferences in one bed: a dual-zone water system, which is the one problem no mattress or bedding change can solve. Cold sleeper who also overheats in summer: an air system, because fast warming is its advantage. Menopause night sweats: a water system with a schedule that pre-cools before your typical wake time is usually the most reliable option.
**Costs to plan for.** Beyond the purchase, budget for electricity (these run all night), replacement covers or sheets every few years, and — for water units — distilled water and cleaning solution. Subscription systems add an annual fee that you should include in any comparison you make.
