No mattress retailer requires a tip, and delivery fees are not tips — they go to the company, not the crew. Tipping a mattress delivery team is customary in some places and unheard of in others, and there is no published industry standard to point to. Treat it as discretionary, decided on the day, based on what the crew actually did.
WHEN A TIP MAKES OBVIOUS SENSE. A two-person white glove crew carrying a heavy mattress up two flights, navigating a tight turn, assembling a base, taking away the old mattress and removing every scrap of packaging has done substantial physical work in your home. A courier who left a box at the kerb has done the job the shipping label describes. Most people who tip, tip in the first case and not the second. Difficult access, bad weather, careful handling of your paintwork and old-mattress removal are the factors that push people towards tipping.
HOW MUCH. There is no standard, so use your own judgement and local norms for in-home trade services. Whatever you decide, tip each crew member rather than handing one person a lump sum and hoping, and have small notes ready before they arrive — nobody wants to hunt for cash while two people stand holding a king in your hallway.
WHAT CREWS CAN AND CANNOT ACCEPT. Policies differ by company. Some third-party delivery contractors accept cash tips freely; some large retailers and parcel carriers prohibit their staff from accepting cash and may allow a gift card or nothing at all. If you want to be sure, ask the crew directly — they will tell you, and it saves an awkward refusal. Never leave cash lying out for a courier who is not required to interact with you.
THINGS THAT ARE OFTEN WORTH MORE THAN CASH. Clear the route and the bedroom before they arrive. Reserve a parking space if parking is difficult. Confine pets. Offer cold drinks in summer. And if the crew did well, submit a review naming them, or call the retailer and say so — crew-level feedback often affects their standing with the company in a way a tip does not.
ONE PRACTICAL WARNING. Do not use a tip to get around a service boundary. If the crew is not authorised or insured to remove your old mattress, take it to the garage, or assemble a frame they did not sell you, offering cash puts them in a difficult position and leaves you with no recourse if something is damaged. Book the service you need when you order instead.
