How High Should My Pillow Be?

The right pillow height is the one that keeps your head level with your spine in the position you sleep in — which means there is no universal number, only a starting range you test. Three things set it: your sleep position, the width of your shoulders, and how far your shoulder sinks into your mattress.

Start from your position

Position sets the size of the gap the pillow has to fill. These are starting ranges to test at home, not prescriptions — a broad-shouldered side sleeper on a firm mattress can need well above the top of the side-sleeping range.

PositionTypical starting loftWhat you are filling
SideHigh — roughly 5 to 7 inchesShoulder width, minus however far the shoulder sinks in
BackMedium — roughly 3 to 5 inchesThe curve behind the neck, without pushing the chin down
StomachLow — under 3 inches, sometimes noneAlmost nothing; the aim is to avoid twisting the neck up

Then adjust for your shoulders

Broader shoulders open a wider gap between the mattress and the side of your head, so they need more loft. Narrower frames need less. This is why two people of the same height can need different pillows on the same bed, and why side-sleeper pillows are sold in multiple heights.

Then adjust for your mattress

A plush mattress swallows the shoulder and closes the gap — subtract loft. A firm mattress holds the shoulder up and opens it — add loft. A topper changes this too, which is why a pillow that worked for years can feel wrong the week after you add one.

The home test is simple and needs another person or a phone propped on a shelf: lie down in your usual position on your usual mattress, get settled for a minute, and take a photo from behind. Your nose should line up with the centre of your chest, and the line of your neck should continue the line of your spine rather than kinking up or down.

  • Plush mattress or soft topper: go a step lower than the range suggests.
  • Firm mattress or firm topper: go a step higher.
  • Changing mattress and pillow in the same week makes the problem impossible to diagnose — change one.

Loft is only useful if the pillow keeps it

A listed loft is the height of the pillow before anyone lies on it. What matters is the height under your head at 3am. Firmer, denser fills — latex, dense shredded foam, firmly packed fibre — keep more of their starting height; down and soft fibre keep the least.

If you buy on the listed number alone, aim slightly higher than your target with a soft fill and closer to the number with a firm one — or buy an adjustable pillow and stop guessing.
