A home hospital bed changes the height of the whole sleep deck and accepts clinical accessories such as rails, a trapeze bar and an IV pole. A consumer adjustable base only raises the head and feet at a fixed frame height. If caregiver access, transfers or fall risk are the reason you are shopping, height is the feature that matters.
Medicare Part B can cover a hospital bed as durable medical equipment when a prescriber documents the medical need, but it denies total-electric beds as a convenience feature. Our Medicare guide sets out the criteria, the codes and the 2026 costs.
A few do, and it is the main reason couples end up paying more. Most home hospital beds use bed-specific twin or full decks; check the size list on each bed before assuming a standard mattress will fit.
Sometimes. The lower-priced beds in our set ship with a basic innerspring mattress; premium beds are frames only, and a pressure-redistribution mattress is a separate purchase. Our specification table lists this for every bed.
Rails reduce some falls and create entrapment risk in others. That decision belongs with the treating clinician or occupational therapist, not with a product page, and it should be revisited as someone's mobility changes.
For a defined recovery period, renting through an enrolled supplier is usually the cheaper route and is how Medicare pays for these beds anyway. Buying makes more sense for long-term aging-in-place, where the residential-looking beds also avoid a clinical bedroom.
