How we test bed frames
Every frame is assembled by a single person and timed, then loaded with a 130 lb queen hybrid plus 350 lb of distributed weight. We stress-cycle each frame with repeated edge sit-downs and roll-overs while recording joint noise, measure slat spacing, deck height, and under-bed clearance, and re-check bolt torque after 30 days of nightly use. Frames that loosen or squeak in that window get marked down regardless of price.
Bed frame questions, answered
How far apart can bed frame slats be?
For a foam or hybrid mattress, slats should be no more than 3 inches apart — wider gaps let foam sag between slats and void most mattress warranties. Innerspring mattresses tolerate up to about 5 inches. If your frame has wider spacing, a bunkie board or a sheet of plywood solves it for under $100.
Do I need a box spring with a platform bed?
No. A platform frame with properly spaced slats is a complete foundation. Adding a box spring raises the bed by 8-9 inches and, on foam mattresses, can actually reduce support because a traditional box spring is designed to flex. Use a low-profile foundation only if you want extra height.
Why does my bed frame squeak, and how do I fix it?
Squeaks almost always come from bolted metal joints or from slats rubbing their support rails. Tighten every bolt with a wrench (hand-tight is not enough), then add felt pads or adhesive foam tape between slats and rails. On wooden frames, a light coat of paraffin wax on joint contact points stops most remaining noise.
What weight capacity do I actually need?
Add mattress weight to occupant weight and add a safety margin. A queen hybrid mattress alone is typically 90-130 lb, so a couple at 400 lb combined needs at least 600 lb of rated capacity. Center legs matter more than the rating on paper — any queen or larger frame should have a center support foot touching the floor.
Is a wood or metal bed frame better?
Metal gives more strength per dollar and is easier to move; solid wood is quieter, holds up longer, and looks better in a bedroom. If budget is the constraint, buy welded metal. If you plan to keep the bed a decade or more, solid hardwood with a center support is the better purchase.
