Why stretch matters more than anything else
A jersey or knit face gives in both directions, so it follows your shoulder and hip into the foam instead of bridging over them. A woven or heavily quilted cover does the opposite, and on a soft foam bed the difference is noticeable within a night or two.
The second effect is pressure: contouring is how a foam mattress spreads load. Flatten it and pressure concentrates again at the shoulder and hip, which is the whole reason people buy foam in the first place.
- Choose stretch knit or jersey over woven cotton or quilted fill.
- Thin beats padded — a protector is not a topper.
- A snug, deep-pocket fit stops the cover bunching, which is what creates hard ridges.
- If you want more cushioning, add a topper deliberately rather than through a thick protector.
Heat is the other memory-foam problem
Foam already holds more heat than coils, so a dense protector compounds a weakness the mattress has. A thin membrane under a breathable knit is the safer combination; a polyester-faced encasement is the one to think twice about on a foam bed.

Fit, depth and adjustable bases
Measure the mattress at the corner from the seam to the top surface, add any topper, and buy a depth rating above that number. A protector that is slightly too shallow pops corners nightly and eventually tears at the elastic.
On an adjustable base, fit matters more again: every articulation tugs at the corners. Deep pockets with a full elastic skirt hold on far better than four corner straps.
Specific mattress brands
Most fitted protectors work on most foam beds, so brand matching is usually about height rather than compatibility. Check the depth your mattress is specified at, then check the depth the protector is rated for — that is the whole compatibility question for the great majority of beds.
Where a manufacturer sells its own protector, it is generally sized to its own tallest models, which is a fair reason to prefer it if your bed is unusually thick.
