Waterproofing: what it really means
Waterproof means a continuous membrane — nearly always a thin polyurethane or TPU film laminated to a fabric face — that liquid cannot pass through. Water-resistant means a treated surface that sheds a splash and lets a spilled glass soak in. Only the first protects a warranty.
The second question is coverage. A fitted, five-sided protector waterproofs the sleeping surface; its skirt is unbacked, so liquid running off the edge reaches the side panel. A zippered encasement seals all six sides, which is what you want for bedwetting, pets or bed bugs.

Do mattress protectors crinkle?
The crinkle people remember comes from vinyl sheeting, which is a solid plastic layer that flexes audibly every time you move. A thin film bonded to a knit or terry face behaves like fabric instead, and the covers in this guide are all built that way.
Fit is the other half of the problem. A protector that is too shallow for the mattress bunches at the corners, and a loose, rumpled layer rustles no matter what it is made of. Our noise ratings are editorial assessments of construction and fit, not decibel measurements.
Do mattress protectors make you sleep hotter?
Some do. Thickness matters most: a quilted protector is effectively a thin pad and will insulate. After that it is the membrane and the face fabric. Breathable polyurethane films let moisture vapour through; vinyl does not. Tencel, lyocell, bamboo-derived rayon and open cotton knits move moisture well, while polyester and dense terry hold more heat. Wool regulates humidity but is usually thick enough to change the feel of the bed.

Will a mattress protector change how my mattress feels?
A thin stretch-knit protector is close to invisible underfoot. A thick quilted one adds a soft layer on top and, more importantly, resists being pushed into the mattress — it spans between the high points of your body rather than following them down.
That matters most on memory foam and other pressure-relieving surfaces, where contouring is the point of the mattress. If that describes your bed, start with protectors for memory foam, which ranks the same products by stretch and thinness first. Fit: depth, skirts and slipping
- Measure at the corner from the seam to the top surface, then add the height of any topper before comparing against a depth rating.
- A full elastic skirt grips far better than four corner straps, especially on a thick hybrid or pillow-top.
- Buy one depth category above your measurement if you use a topper — a tight cover tears at the elastic.
- On an adjustable base, every articulation tugs the corners; deep pockets and stretch fabric both help.
- Bunching is usually a sizing problem, not a quality problem — and it is the main cause of noise.

Practical fit and noise checks
Fit the dry protector over your real mattress and any topper, then change positions under your usual sheets. Note bunching, audible rustling and whether the corners stay on during adjustable-base movement. We compare published construction — membrane type, face fabric, quilting, depth rating, closure — against manufacturer specifications and long-run owner feedback, and we translate that into the editorial assessments shown in the table. Where we have not measured something, we do not publish a number for it: there are no decibel readings, temperature drops or moisture-transfer percentages on this page, because we have not run protectors through the instrumented lab protocol we use for mattresses.
Care and replacement
Wash every one to two months, or straight away after a spill. Warm water rather than hot, no fabric softener, and tumble dry on low — heat is what delaminates a waterproof film. Expect to replace a waterproof cover every few years, and sooner if the backing stiffens or liquid starts getting through.
Bed bugs: only an encasement works
A fitted cover leaves the underside, piping, tags and handles exposed, and those are exactly where bed bugs harbour. A zippered six-sided encasement seals the mattress instead. Cover the foundation too, check that the zipper has an end-stop or flap, and leave both on for at least a year.
