A solid king base means agreeing on every position. A Split King means two Twin XL bases side by side under two Twin XL mattresses, each with its own motor and remote, and it is the only way to have one partner sitting up while the other lies flat.
The costs are real: two mattresses, a seam down the middle, and split bedding. Most couples who make the switch consider the seam a fair price for independent movement and separate firmness choices.

Split King, explained quickly
Two Twin XL mattresses measure 38 by 80 inches each and together equal a standard king's 76 by 80 inches, so the footprint and the bedroom layout do not change. What changes is that each half articulates on its own.
A single king mattress cannot be used on a split base — it will not flex in two directions and will be damaged. Plan for two Twin XL mattresses from the start, which is also what lets each partner choose their own firmness.

Two bases mean two remotes, which is the small irritation of split king ownership. Many brands offer a sync function that pairs the sides so they move together on command, and app control that lets one phone drive both.
Programmable memory positions matter more with two people than one, because each partner ends up with a reading position and a sleeping position they return to nightly.
Handling the gap
The seam between two Twin XL mattresses is the most common complaint, and it is solvable. A foam gap filler wedge sits in the seam under the fitted sheets, and connector straps stop the bases drifting apart as they articulate.
For bedding, most owners use two Twin XL fitted sheets with a king flat sheet or comforter on top — that way each side can move without the bedding pulling.
Different sleep schedules, different positions
The strongest argument for split king has nothing to do with features: it is that one person can read or watch something upright while the other sleeps flat, without negotiation. Couples with different schedules tend to be the happiest with the configuration.
Positions are comfort choices. A raised head is not a treatment for snoring or apnea, and a partner's snoring that concerns you is worth a clinical conversation rather than a furniture purchase.
