What you keep under $1,000
The core mechanism is mature and the budget end of the market benefits from it. Dual motors, a zero-gravity preset, a wireless remote and a usable weight capacity are all standard at this price from established brands.
Build quality varies more than features do. A steel frame with six legs and a listed capacity of 650 lb or more is a better signal at this price than a long feature list.

What you give up
Wall-hugging travel is the most commonly missed omission: without it, raising the head slides you away from the nightstand. Massage, under-bed lighting and USB ports are nice-to-haves that budget bases usually skip.
The more consequential omission is warranty length on motors and electronics. Frames are often warranted 10–20 years at every price; motor coverage is where budget bases are shorter, and motors are what fail.

Where to spend if you can stretch
If another few hundred dollars is possible, the two upgrades that change daily use are wall-hugging travel and a longer motor warranty. Massage and lighting are pleasant and rarely the reason anyone keeps or returns a base.
If the budget is fixed, a cheaper base plus a better mattress is almost always the better bed. The mattress determines how you sleep; the base determines what positions are available.
Watch the total cost
Delivery and assembly can add meaningfully to a budget purchase. Bases at this price often ship curbside, which means getting a heavy box into the bedroom and assembling it with a second person.
Also check whether your existing bed frame can take the base, whether the legs are included, and whether a headboard bracket is extra. Those are the costs that turn a $799 base into a $950 one.
