    How to Choose a Hypoallergenic Mattress Protector

    "Hypoallergenic" is an unregulated word on bedding. What actually reduces allergy symptoms is a physical barrier tight enough to block dust mite allergen — a specification measured in microns, not a claim printed on a box.

    Dust mites themselves are 100–300 microns. Their allergen particles are far smaller, which is why allergy-grade barriers target a pore size around 6 microns or finer while still being woven fabric rather than plastic film.

    The number to look for is a published pore or micron rating — 6 microns or below is the allergy-barrier standard. A product that will not publish a figure is asking you to trust a marketing adjective.

    It does nothing about carpet, curtains, upholstered furniture or the pillow you did not encase. Bedroom-wide humidity control below 50% matters as much as the protector, because mites cannot survive dry air.

    The routine that makes it work

    Barriers are a one-time purchase attached to an ongoing habit. Without the wash cycle and the humidity control, symptom improvement tends to be modest.

    • Wash sheets and pillowcases weekly at 130°F or tumble dry hot for 15 minutes.
    • Keep bedroom relative humidity under 50%.
    • Vacuum the mattress surface with a HEPA machine every one to three months.
    • Leave the encasement zipped; wash it every two to three months, not weekly.

    If your reaction is to chemistry rather than mites, the relevant signals are emissions certifications: GREENGUARD Gold for low VOC output, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for restricted substances, and GOTS if you want certified organic cotton throughout. These are independent programs with published criteria, unlike "hypoallergenic" itself.

    Latex allergy is worth flagging separately: some protectors and many toppers use natural latex. If you are sensitised, check the fibre content rather than assuming a cotton face means a cotton product.
