Encasement vs. protector for bed bugs
A protector guards the sleeping surface. An encasement quarantines the mattress. For bed bugs only the second job matters, because the insects do not need the top surface — they nest in piping, tags, handles and the underside of the foundation.
Cover the box spring or foundation as well. Treating the mattress alone is the most common reason a home re-infests after professional treatment.
- Mattress encasement: required.
- Box spring or foundation encasement: equally required.
- Fitted waterproof protector: optional, layered on top.
- Pillow encasements: cheap and worth adding.
