The Newton Original is the mattress that made breathable crib sleep mainstream. Instead of foam or innersprings, it uses a Wovenaire core — extruded food-grade polymer strands that are roughly 90% air — under a 3D spacer cover. Both the cover and the core can be washed, which is the single biggest practical advantage over every other crib mattress we test. At 5.5 inches with a firm infant feel, it meets safe-sleep firmness guidance while allowing air to pass straight through the sleep surface.
