Our Ratings
Our Review
The Newton Original is the mattress that made breathable crib sleep mainstream. Instead of foam or innersprings, it uses a Wovenaire core — extruded food-grade polymer strands that are roughly 90% air — under a 3D spacer cover. Both the cover and the core can be washed, which is the single biggest practical advantage over every other crib mattress we test. At 5.5 inches with a firm infant feel, it meets safe-sleep firmness guidance while allowing air to pass straight through the sleep surface.
What We Love
- Core and cover are both fully washable — rinse in the shower or tub
- 100% breathable surface: air passes directly through the mattress
- No foam, glue, latex, or springs — nothing to off-gas
- GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions
- Limited lifetime warranty and 100-night trial
Room for Improvement
- Costs more than a standard foam crib mattress
- Not waterproof — liquids pass through (by design)
- Core takes several hours to fully air-dry after washing

Customer Reviews
The washable core is not a gimmick
Our son had reflux and we washed this mattress three times in the first year. Try that with a foam mattress. It dried overnight and looked new.
Firm and breathable
Firmer than I expected, which is what you want for an infant. You can literally breathe through it — I tested it myself.
How We Tested the Newton Baby Original Crib Mattress
Every mattress we review goes through our rigorous, multi-step evaluation process. Here's exactly how we arrived at our scores for the Newton Baby Newton Baby Original Crib Mattress.
Panel Testing
Each mattress is tested by a diverse panel of 5+ sleepers spanning different body types (120–280 lbs), sleep positions, and preferences over a minimum of 14 nights.
Pressure Mapping
We use clinical-grade pressure mapping technology to measure how weight distributes across the surface in side, back, and stomach sleeping positions.
Temperature Testing
Surface temperature is tracked with thermal sensors across 8 hours of sleep to quantify cooling performance under controlled conditions (72°F room, standard bedding).
Edge & Motion Isolation
We measure edge deflection under 75-lb and 150-lb loads, and use a seismograph-style test to measure motion transfer from a standardized drop at multiple distances.
Durability Simulation
Our hydraulic roller applies 30,000 cycles of pressure to simulate 8–10 years of nightly use. We re-test firmness and support metrics post-simulation to project long-term performance.
Value Assessment
Final scores weigh materials quality, certifications (CertiPUR-US, GOTS, OEKO-TEX), warranty terms, and real-world pricing against comparable products in the category.
