    Percale or sateen — which sheets should I buy?

    Buy percale if you sleep hot or like the crisp, cool feel of a good hotel bed; buy sateen if you run cold or want a silky drape. In our airflow testing, percale moved noticeably more air than sateen at the same thread count, and percale surface temperature after 30 minutes of body contact averaged about 2°F cooler. Percale wrinkles more; sateen pills more over time.

    Does a higher thread count mean better sheets?

    No. Above roughly 400, thread count is mostly a marketing number — manufacturers inflate it by counting plies in a multi-ply yarn. Fiber quality (long-staple cotton such as Supima or Egyptian) and weave matter far more. Our highest-rated percale sets sit between 250 and 400 single-ply threads.

    How much should I spend on a good sheet set?

    $100-$180 for a queen buys long-staple cotton with clean stitching and deep pockets — the point where quality stops scaling much with price. Below $60 you generally get short-staple cotton or a poly blend that pills within a year. Above $250 you are usually paying for branding, not measurable performance.

    What pocket depth do I need for a thick mattress?

    Measure your mattress including any topper. Standard fitted sheets fit up to 12 inches; most modern hybrids run 12-15 inches, and with a topper you can exceed 17. Look for sheets labeled deep-pocket (15 inch) or extra-deep (18 inch), and prefer sets with all-around elastic rather than corner-only elastic.

    Are bamboo sheets actually cooler than cotton?

    Bamboo viscose feels cooler on first contact because it conducts heat away from skin quickly, but over a full night percale cotton and linen ventilated better in our tests. If your problem is the initial too-warm feeling when getting into bed, bamboo wins. If you sweat through the night, percale or linen is the better fix.

    How often should sheets be washed and replaced?

    Wash weekly in warm (not hot) water and tumble dry low — high heat is the main cause of premature fiber breakdown and elastic failure. A quality long-staple cotton set lasts 3-5 years of weekly rotation; linen often lasts longer. Replace when you see thinning at the center of the flat sheet or the fitted sheet stops gripping.

    Do I need to wash new sheets before using them?

    Yes. New sheets carry sizing and finishing agents from manufacturing that make them feel stiff and can irritate sensitive skin. Percale in particular needs three to five washes to reach its true softened feel, so judge a set after a few cycles rather than the first night.

    How do we test bedding?

    Every set is slept on for a minimum of two weeks by a tester, then run through at least ten wash-and-dry cycles. We measure shrinkage, log pilling and color loss, check fitted-sheet pocket depth against a 14-inch hybrid, and record surface temperature after 30 minutes of body contact to score cooling.
