- A 100-night trial is the market default, not a generous offer: 68 of 178 models land exactly there.

Why the trial matters more than the warranty
Bodies adapt to a new sleep surface over two to four weeks, which is why most brands ask you to keep the mattress for 21 to 30 nights before starting a return. A trial shorter than that break-in period gives you no real decision window.
The number on the box is also only half the policy. Return fees, pickup arrangements, original-packaging requirements and one-exchange-only rules decide what the trial is actually worth.

Trial lengths were parsed from the published trial field on each mattress. Terms stated in months were converted to nights; anything that is not a fixed numeric period — retailer return policies, promotion-dependent terms — is excluded from the averages and reported separately.
Brand figures are the median across every model of that brand in the database, so a single outlier model does not distort a brand's position.

- This is our own review catalogue, not a random sample of the mattress market. We review more direct-to-consumer beds than store-brand ones, so the mix here skews toward boxed and online brands.

How long is a typical mattress trial?
100 nights is the industry default and by far the most common single value in our database. Trials of a full year exist but come from a minority of brands.
Is a longer sleep trial better?
Up to a point. Most people know within six to eight weeks, and almost all brands require you to keep the bed 21 to 30 nights before returning it. Past about 180 nights the extra time rarely changes the outcome — the return fees and pickup terms matter more.
Do you have to pay to return a mattress?
It depends on the brand. Some collect free of charge and donate the bed; others charge a return or restocking fee, and mattresses bought through a retailer often follow that retailer's policy rather than the manufacturer's.
