What we found
- Ranked by how strongly price predicts them, our scored categories line up as comfort r = 0.38, durability r = 0.33, support r = 0.32, cooling r = 0.31, edge support r = 0.31, motion isolation r = 0.26. Every one of these is a modest-to-moderate relationship at best: price is a weak instrument for predicting any single quality.
- The gradient is real but gentle: Under $500 averages 7.45, $500–$999 averages 8.74, $1,000–$1,999 averages 8.94, $2,000–$2,999 averages 8.94, $3,000+ averages 9.27.
- Warranty length tracks price loosely, and lifetime warranties are not confined to expensive beds — 26 of 185 models in the database carry one.
- A long warranty is not a durability measurement. Most warranties only cover visible sagging past a stated depth with the correct foundation in place, which is why we publish the roller-test result separately.

How we test durability
Our roller test simulates roughly eight years of nightly use — 30,000 cycles of a weighted roller across the sleep surface — and we record a pass only when no visible body impression exceeds 0.75 inches afterwards. That threshold matters because it is close to the depth most manufacturers use as their own warranty trigger.
Durability scores for mattresses that have not been through the roller test are based on construction inspection: foam density, coil gauge and count, cover and quilting quality, and the manufacturer's own published specifications.
Method
We correlated price against our durability score across the full database, then broke the results into price bands alongside the pass rate of our 30,000-cycle roller test for the lab-tested subset.
Warranty terms were parsed from each mattress's published warranty text. Lifetime and 'forever' warranties are reported as a separate share rather than converted to a number.
Durability scores for beds without a completed roller test are construction-based: foam density, coil gauge and count, cover quality and the manufacturer's own specifications.
Limitations
- Our category scores are editorial judgements applied under one consistent rubric, not laboratory constants. Where a lab measurement exists we report the instrument reading alongside the score so you can check the two against each other.
- Only 34 of the 185 mattresses in the database have been through the instrumented lab protocol. Lab-based figures below use that smaller group and are labelled with their own sample size.
- Prices are the queen-size figures recorded in our database at the last check and move constantly with promotions. Treat price findings as a snapshot of the market we sampled, not a live price index.
Frequently asked
How long should a mattress last?
Seven to ten years is the normal service life for a well-built mattress. Budget all-foam beds frequently show meaningful comfort layer softening within three to five years, which is the pattern the durability scores in this study reflect.
Does a longer warranty mean a more durable mattress?
Not reliably. Warranties cover manufacturing defects and sagging past a stated depth, usually 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with the correct foundation in place. Gradual softening — the thing that actually ends most mattresses — is almost never covered.
What is the cheapest mattress that still lasts?
Our data shows durability scores becoming consistently strong from around $1,000, though several beds under that price score well. The study includes a table of the highest durability scores available under $1,200.
