    What we found

    • Cost per rating point is the fairest single number we can compute from our own data: it rewards a bed that scores well for its price and penalises one that charges heavily for a small scoring advantage.
    • Comparing within construction type matters. Natural latex and hand-built innersprings genuinely cost more to make, so judging them against boxed memory foam would flag the whole category as overpriced when the materials explain most of the gap.
    • The largest premiums in the dataset are concentrated at the luxury end, where finish, hand construction, showroom retail and brand carry costs that our scoring rubric does not measure.
    • The opposite tail is more useful to most buyers: the lowest cost-per-point beds are where an extra $200 of budget buys the most additional quality.

    How the metric works

Cost per rating point = current queen price ÷ overall score. We then divide that by the median cost per point for the same construction family (hybrid, memory foam, latex, innerspring, airbed) to get a ratio. A ratio of 1.0 is exactly typical for its type; 2.0 means twice the going rate.

Nothing in this calculation changes a published score. It is a pure derivation from the price and the score already on each review.

These mattresses deliver the most overall score for every dollar of queen price within their own construction type. They are not necessarily the best mattresses in the database — they are the most efficient.

    Method

Cost per rating point is queen price divided by overall score. Each mattress is then compared with the median cost per point for its own construction family, so materials-driven cost differences between categories do not distort the result.

Only construction families with at least five reviewed models are used as benchmarks; mattresses in thinner categories are excluded.

This is a derivation from published prices and published scores. No score was adjusted, and nothing here changes a ranking anywhere else on the site.

    Limitations

    • A high cost per rating point is not a verdict on quality. Hand construction, natural materials, white-glove delivery and long warranties are real costs that our rubric does not score.
    • Prices are the queen-size figures recorded in our database at the last check and move constantly with promotions. Treat price findings as a snapshot of the market we sampled, not a live price index.
    • Our category scores are editorial judgements applied under one consistent rubric, not laboratory constants. Where a lab measurement exists we report the instrument reading alongside the score so you can check the two against each other.

    Frequently asked

Does a high cost per rating point mean a bad mattress?

No. Several mattresses at the top of this list score well. It means you are paying substantially more than an equally good mattress of the same construction type costs.

    Why compare within construction type?

Natural latex, hand-tufted innersprings and airbeds cost more to manufacture than boxed foam. Benchmarking each bed against its own category isolates the premium from the material cost.

What is the best value mattress?

By this metric, the beds with the lowest cost per rating point within their category. The study lists the twelve most efficient in our database.
