What we found
- Height's correlations are all in modest territory: overall score r = 0.42, durability r = 0.42, comfort r = 0.53, support r = 0.46, price r = 0.29. None of them is strong enough to use profile as a shortcut for quality.
- Average scores by profile band are close together: Under 10 inches scores 8.29, 10–11.9 inches scores 8.62, 12–13.9 inches scores 8.8, 14–15.9 inches scores 8.97, 16 inches and over scores 9.06.
- Thickness has one genuine mechanical effect — it allows a deeper comfort layer above the support core, which matters most for heavier sleepers and side sleepers who need shoulder and hip clearance.
- Below about 10 inches, comfort layers get thin enough that heavier sleepers can feel the support core. Above about 14 inches, extra profile mostly changes bed height, sheet fit and how hard the mattress is to move.

Method
Heights were parsed from each mattress's published profile. Ranges are recorded as their midpoint; anything without a stated height is excluded and the exclusion count is reported.
We correlated height against overall score, comfort, support, durability and price, then grouped the catalogue into profile bands and averaged within each.
Nothing in this study changes a published score or ranking.
Limitations
- 20 models are excluded because their published height is a range we could not parse or is not stated.
- Our category scores are editorial judgements applied under one consistent rubric, not laboratory constants. Where a lab measurement exists we report the instrument reading alongside the score so you can check the two against each other.
- Prices are the queen-size figures recorded in our database at the last check and move constantly with promotions. Treat price findings as a snapshot of the market we sampled, not a live price index.

How thick should a mattress be?
Ten to fourteen inches suits most sleepers. Thinner than about ten inches, heavier sleepers can feel the support core; thicker than fourteen, you are mostly changing bed height and sheet requirements.
Is a thicker mattress more comfortable?
Not by itself. In our data, height tracks price more closely than it tracks comfort or overall score. What matters is how the layers inside the profile are built.
Do thick mattresses need deep-pocket sheets?
Yes. Standard fitted sheets are cut for roughly a 12-inch profile. From 14 inches up you need deep-pocket sheets or the corners will pull off.
