Method
Every mattress in the database is assigned to a construction family from its published type. Hybrids are any coil-plus-foam build; memory foam covers all-foam viscoelastic builds including gel variants.
We averaged each scored category within both groups, then repeated the comparison using only the subset that has completed our instrumented lab protocol so editorial scores can be checked against instrument readings.
Latex hybrids are counted in the latex family, not the hybrid family, because the comfort material drives the feel.
Limitations
- Our category scores are editorial judgements applied under one consistent rubric, not laboratory constants. Where a lab measurement exists we report the instrument reading alongside the score so you can check the two against each other.
- Only 34 of the 185 mattresses in the database have been through the instrumented lab protocol. Lab-based figures below use that smaller group and are labelled with their own sample size.
- This is our own review catalogue, not a random sample of the mattress market. We review more direct-to-consumer beds than store-brand ones, so the mix here skews toward boxed and online brands.

Hybrids score higher on average in our data, mainly on cooling and edge support. Memory foam wins on motion isolation and price. If you sleep hot or sit on the edge of the bed, choose a hybrid; if you share a bed with a restless partner and want to spend less, memory foam is the better trade.
Do hybrids last longer than memory foam?
In our scoring the durability gap between the two families is smaller than the cooling gap. Pocketed coils resist body impressions well, but a hybrid's comfort layer is still foam and is still the first thing to soften.
Which type is better for back pain?
Both categories contain strong options. What matters more than the family is a firmness that keeps the lumbar spine neutral under your weight, plus a support core zoned for the hips.
