    What we found

    • Firmness in this catalogue clusters heavily in the middle: Soft (3–4.5) 16 models, Medium (5–5.5) 64 models, Medium-firm (6–6.5) 83 models, Firm (7–7.5) 17 models, Extra firm (8+) 5 models.
    • In the lab, firmness and measured sinkage under a 230 lb back sleeper move together as expected (r = -0.63), and firmness and peak shoulder pressure for a 165 lb side sleeper move in the opposite direction (r = 0.45) — firmer surfaces concentrate more pressure at the shoulder.
    • Beds we rate 5.5 or softer averaged 2.27" of lumbar sinkage against 1.95" for beds rated 6.5 and firmer.
    • The practical rule: heavier sleepers need a firmer nominal rating to reach the same effective support, and lighter sleepers need a softer one to get any contouring at all. A 120 lb side sleeper on a 7/10 bed is sleeping on a floor with a sheet over it.

    Manufacturers concentrate on the medium to medium-firm range because it satisfies the largest share of buyers. That is genuinely useful if you sit in the middle of the weight distribution — and it is why sleepers at either end have a much smaller shortlist.

    What the lab measured under load

    Two measurements test the theory directly. Lumbar sinkage is recorded under a 230 lb back-sleeping subject; peak shoulder pressure is recorded for a 165 lb side sleeper on an XSensor pad, where 32 mmHg is the capillary-closure threshold used in clinical pressure work. Both behave the way the firmness scale predicts, which is the check that the scale means something physical.

    Firm, strongly supported beds for heavier sleepers

    Filtered from the database: firmness 6.5 or higher with support and durability both scoring 9 or above. These are the builds that hold their geometry under load rather than simply feeling hard on day one.

    Method

    We charted the firmness distribution across the whole database, then set it against the target firmness windows used to build our sleep-position × body-weight pages.

    To test whether the firmness scale corresponds to something physical, we correlated it against two lab measurements: lumbar sinkage under a 230 lb back-sleeping subject, and peak shoulder pressure for a 165 lb side sleeper on a pressure-mapping pad.

    Firmness ratings themselves were not changed for this analysis.

    Limitations

    • Firmness is a perceived scale, not a physical unit. Ours is applied consistently by the same testers, but it is not directly comparable to another publication's numbers.
    • Only 34 of the 185 mattresses in the database have been through the instrumented lab protocol. Lab-based figures below use that smaller group and are labelled with their own sample size.
    • Weight bands are a simplification. Height, body shape, where you carry weight, and whether you share the bed all change the right answer.

    What firmness should a heavier sleeper choose?

    Generally one to one and a half points firmer than the standard recommendation for their sleep position, because the same construction compresses further under a heavier load. Support core quality matters more than the surface number.

    What firmness is best for lightweight sleepers?

    Softer than the usual advice. A sleeper under 150 lb often does not compress a medium-firm bed enough to get any contouring, so a nominally soft mattress can feel merely medium.

    Is medium-firm best for most people?

    It is the most widely suitable single answer, which is why manufacturers concentrate there — and our firmness distribution shows exactly that clustering. It is not the right answer for sleepers at either end of the weight range.
