    Avocado Organic Toddler Pillow Overview

Avocado's Organic Toddler Pillow pairs shredded GOLS-certified organic latex and GOTS-certified organic kapok with a GOTS organic cotton cover, at 20" x 12" for $50. It is spot clean only, non-adjustable, and positioned for ages 2 and up.

    Our Review

Avocado's toddler pillow measures 20" x 12" — roughly two inches longer than a standard toddler pillow — and is filled with shredded GOLS-certified organic latex and GOTS-certified organic kapok under an organic cotton cover. At $50 single ($90 for a two-pack) it is the pillow we recommend once a child has moved out of a crib and into a toddler bed. Children roughly 3 and older who need a full-size pillow should step up to Avocado's Organic Kids Pillow (19" x 25", $89) instead.

    Our Research Evaluation

Children's pillows are one of the few categories where the material spec matters more than the comfort spec, and this is where Avocado is unusually specific. The fill is shredded GOLS-certified organic latex blended with GOTS-certified organic kapok, the shell is GOTS-certified organic cotton, and the finished pillow carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, MADE SAFE and GREENGUARD Gold certification. Each of those covers something different — fiber content, restricted substances, chemical emissions — which is why we list them separately rather than leaning on a blanket claim.

At 20" x 12" and 1.5 lbs it is longer than many toddler pillows, something Avocado flags itself. That matters mainly for pillowcases: a snug 12" x 16" case will not fit, while a 13" x 18" toddler case or a standard case will. The loft is low and the latex content gives it more push-back than a pure fiber pillow, so it does not collapse flat the way a cotton-filled toddler pillow does.

Two practical limits. Avocado states the pillow should not be washed — spot clean only — so a protector is close to essential at this age. And the fill is sewn in, with no zipper, so loft cannot be adjusted. Once a child is in a twin bed and wants a full-size pillow, Avocado's Organic Kids Pillow (19" x 25", $89) is the step up rather than this one. We have evaluated construction, materials, specifications, certifications and policies for this pillow; we have not run it through physical testing.

    What We Love

    • GOTS-certified cotton and kapok with GOLS-certified organic latex — no polyester or foam fill
    • Low 20" x 12" profile sized to a toddler bed rather than an adult pillow
    • Sewn shut — no zipper or loose parts
    • Certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, MADE SAFE and GREENGUARD Gold
    • 100-night trial with a 1-year warranty

    Room for Improvement

    • Spot clean only — Avocado states the pillow should not be washed
    • One size only — no adjustable loft
    • Longer than many toddler pillows, so tight 12" x 16" cases will not fit
    • Children usually move up to the larger Organic Kids Pillow ($89) before long

    Perfect first pillow

My 2.5 year old loves it. Perfect thickness — not too fluffy or flat. I feel good knowing it's truly organic.

Toddler pillow vs junior pillow: which Avocado pillow is this?

Avocado does not currently sell a pillow called a "junior pillow". The two children's sizes in the line are the Avocado Organic Toddler Pillow (20" x 12", $50) reviewed on this page, and the larger Avocado Organic Kids Pillow (19" x 25", $89). Searches for an "Avocado junior pillow" almost always land on one of these two.

Avocado positions the toddler size for ages 2 and up and the Kids Pillow for ages 3 and up. Both use the same materials — organic cotton shell, shredded organic latex and organic kapok, sewn shut with no zipper — so the decision is size, not construction. The toddler size is made for a toddler bed; the Kids Pillow is a full-size pillow that fits a standard pillowcase.

Pillows are not used in cribs. If you are unsure whether your child is ready for a pillow, follow your pediatrician's advice and current safe-sleep guidance.

Size, pillowcase fit and sleep positions

At 20" x 12" and 1.5 lbs, this is longer than many toddler pillows, which Avocado itself flags on the product page. That matters for cases: a snug 12" x 16" toddler case will be tight, a 13" x 18" toddler case is the safer buy, and a standard adult case will fit but leave loose fabric. The compact footprint also makes it easy to pack for travel or preschool naps.

    • Back sleeping: The low loft suits back sleeping, which is how most young children start the night. A full-size adult pillow is the thing to avoid here — the extra height tips a small head forward.
    • Side sleeping: There is less loft than a side-sleeping adult would want, but a child's shoulder is much narrower, so the gap it needs to fill is smaller. The latex content keeps it from flattening out completely.
    • Stomach sleeping: Any pillow is more than a stomach sleeper needs. Children who roll onto their front will push it aside; that is normal and not a fit problem.

    Who should buy it

    • You want certified organic fill and cover rather than polyester, and you want the certification named rather than implied.
    • You need a small, low-profile pillow for a toddler bed rather than a full-size pillow.
    • You already use Avocado bedding and want the same material story across the room.
    • You prefer a sewn-shut pillow with no zipper or removable parts.

    Who should skip it

    • You want a pillow you can throw in the washing machine — this one is spot clean only.
    • You want adjustable loft. The fill is sewn in and cannot be removed or added to.
    • Your child is older and needs a full-size pillow — Avocado's Avocado Organic Kids Pillow (19" x 25", $89) is the step up.
    • Price is the deciding factor. Conventional toddler pillows with polyester fill cost far less, without the certifications.

Avocado Organic Toddler Pillow: Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Avocado Organic Toddler Pillow worth it?

It is worth it if certified organic materials are your priority. Generic toddler pillows cost $15–$25 with polyester fill and no third-party certification; at $50 ($90 for a two-pack) you are paying for GOTS-certified cotton and kapok, GOLS-certified organic latex, and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, MADE SAFE and GREENGUARD Gold certification. The tradeoffs are spot-clean-only care and a fixed loft.

What age is the Avocado toddler pillow for?

Avocado positions the toddler size for ages 2 and up, and its larger Organic Kids Pillow for ages 3 and up. Pillows are not used in cribs — keep cribs bare. If you are unsure whether your child is ready for a pillow, follow your pediatrician's advice and current safe-sleep guidance.

What size is the Avocado toddler pillow?

20 x 12 inches and 1.5 lbs. Avocado notes it is roughly two inches longer than a standard toddler pillow, so a snug 12 x 16 inch toddler case will not fit. Use a 13 x 18 inch toddler case or larger.

Does it fit a standard pillowcase?

Yes, a standard adult case will fit, but it will leave loose fabric around the pillow. A toddler-size case of 13 x 18 inches or larger is the closer fit.

What is inside the Avocado toddler pillow?

Shredded GOLS-certified organic latex blended with GOTS-certified organic kapok, inside a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover. There is no polyester, microfiber or polyurethane foam fill, and the pillow is sewn shut with no zipper.

Is the Avocado toddler pillow organic?

The cotton cover and the kapok fill are GOTS certified and the latex is GOLS certified, so the main components are certified organic. That is not the same as the finished pillow being certified organic as a whole, so we name the individual certifications rather than describing the whole pillow as organic.

Is the Avocado toddler pillow adjustable?

No. The fill is sewn in with no zipper, so loft cannot be added or removed. If you want adjustable loft for an older child, an adjustable shredded-fill pillow is the better fit.

    Is the cover washable?

No. Avocado states the pillow should not be washed and recommends spot cleaning only, drying it thoroughly afterwards. Because the cover is sewn on rather than removable, a pillow protector you can launder is the practical way to keep it clean at this age.

Is the Avocado toddler pillow firm or soft?

Soft, with a low loft, but the shredded latex content gives it more push-back than a pure cotton or fiber toddler pillow, so it does not collapse completely flat under a small head.

What certifications does the Avocado toddler pillow have?

GOTS on the organic cotton and kapok, GOLS on the organic latex, plus OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold and Certified Vegan. Each standard covers something different — fiber content, restricted substances and chemical emissions — which is why we list them individually.

What is the difference between Avocado's toddler and junior pillow?

Avocado does not currently sell a pillow named a junior pillow. The larger children's size is the Organic Kids Pillow at 19 x 25 inches and $89, recommended for ages 3 and up and sized for a standard pillowcase. Both use the same materials, so the choice is size: the 20 x 12 inch toddler pillow for a toddler bed, the Kids Pillow once a child is in a twin bed.

What trial and warranty does it come with?

Avocado lists a 100-night trial and a 1-year warranty on the pillow. Pricing is $50 for a single and $90 for a two-pack; check the current price before ordering, as Avocado discounts pillows around major sale weekends.

    How Sleep Sage Evaluates Pillows

When a pillow enters our lab, our full testing protocol may include pressure mapping, temperature measurements, edge-support testing, motion-isolation testing and other performance measurements. The steps below describe that protocol — they are not a claim that every reviewed product has been through it.

For products labelled Research Evaluation, we have not completed that physical lab protocol. Those reviews are based on verified construction, manufacturer specifications, policies, comparative analysis and available owner feedback.

Lab Tested: This pillow completed our physical testing protocol. The measurements published for it come from that testing.

    Multi-Position Testing

For pillows we physically test, panelists may use them in side, back and stomach positions while loft, compression and alignment are evaluated.

    Loft & Support Mapping

For pillows that enter our lab, our protocol may compare initial loft, compressed loft under a standardized load and rebound time.

    Temperature Regulation

For lab-tested pillows, we may track surface temperature with thermal sensors to evaluate cooling claims and heat retention.

    Shape Retention Testing

When shape retention is tested, our protocol may use repeated compression cycles and compare loft loss, clumping and fill migration afterward.

    Hypoallergenic & Value Review

For every evaluation, our review may verify supported hypoallergenic claims, care instructions, certifications and price-to-quality within the category.

Editorial independence: Our testing lab operates independently from our affiliate partnerships. Brands cannot pay for higher scores or influence our methodology. Read our full editorial policy and detailed testing methodology.
