Coop Original Adjustable Pillow Overview
The Coop Original Adjustable Pillow is Consumer Reports Recommended with customizable fill for all sleep positions. Our testing confirmed its versatility as the best all-around pillow, with machine washability and cooling bamboo cover.
Our Review
The Coop Original Adjustable Pillow is our top pick for customizable comfort. Consumer Reports Recommended, this pillow lets you add or remove fill to find your perfect loft. The cross-cut memory foam and microfiber blend offers the perfect balance of support and plushness, while the bamboo-derived cover stays cool all night.
Our Hands-On Experience
The Coop Original's adjustable fill is genuinely game-changing. I spent two evenings experimenting with different fill levels — removing about a quarter for side sleeping, adding some back for back sleeping — and found my perfect loft within a week. No other pillow I've tested offers this level of customization.
The cross-cut memory foam and microfiber blend creates a unique texture that's supportive without being dense. Traditional shredded memory foam pillows feel chunky; Coop's cross-cutting produces a smoother, more pillow-like feel while retaining the conforming properties of memory foam.
Machine washability sets this apart from solid foam pillows. After two wash cycles, the fill maintained its loft and support. The bamboo-derived Lulltra cover feels cool and smooth — a nice bonus that elevates the overall sleep experience.
The Consumer Reports recommendation and CertiPUR-US/GREENGUARD Gold certifications provide third-party validation. At $89, this is the pillow I recommend most often to friends and family because it works for virtually every sleep position with simple fill adjustment.

Finally found my perfect pillow
Being able to adjust the fill is a game changer. I removed about 1/4 of the fill and now it's absolutely perfect for side sleeping.
Great quality
Very well made and the adjustability is great. Took a couple tries to get the right amount of fill but worth it.
Coop Original Adjustable Pillow: Lab Results & Long-Term Testing
Tested September 3, 2026 by BT/MR. Verified on coopsleepgoods.com on September 3, 2026.
Measured in our lab
The Original is the shredded-fill benchmark we measure every other adjustable pillow against, so we ran it at three fill levels: full, the factory fill minus one cup, and minus three cups.
| Metric | Result | Category avg. | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loft, factory fill (12 lb head form) | 5.6 in | 5.0 in | Too tall for most back sleepers out of the bag — this is why the removable fill bag matters. |
| Loft, minus three cups | 4.1 in | — | The sweet spot for back sleepers and smaller-framed side sleepers in our panel. |
| Surface temp rise (60 min) | 5.8°F | 6.4°F | Cooler than solid memory foam, warmer than latex. Shredded fill breathes because of the air gaps, not the foam. |
| Loft loss after 60 nights | 4% | 11% | Best-in-class. Fluffing restores it fully; the fill is user-replaceable when it finally packs down. |
| Support recovery (head lift to re-loft) | 1.2 sec | 2.1 sec | Fast enough that side-to-back switchers don't feel stuck in an old head divot. |
Our long-term sleep log
Two testers slept on the Original for 60 nights — one 5'4" side sleeper, one 6'1" back sleeper who snores.
Night 1
Mild polyurethane smell out of the bag; gone by the second morning after airing it out. Both testers over-lofted at factory fill.
Week 1
Side sleeper kept full fill and added the tester's own quarter-cup back. Back sleeper pulled three cups and finally stopped waking with a chin-to-chest angle.
Week 4
No packing down. The Lulltra cover pilled slightly at the zipper seam after two washes but nowhere else.
Night 60
Re-measured at 5.4 in from 5.6 in — inside our margin. One fluff each morning is all it needs.
Care, washing & durability
The cover is machine washable and dryer safe on low; the inner fill bag is not, and that trips people up. Wash the cover only, and tumble the fill bag on air-fluff with two dryer balls every couple of months to break up compression.
Coop sells replacement fill by the half-pound, which is the reason this pillow tends to outlive the five-year warranty. When shredded foam finally compresses past the point that fluffing fixes, you top it up for around $20 instead of replacing the pillow.
The bottom line
Still the most adjustable pillow we test, and the one we hand to anyone who doesn't know their loft. It runs a little warm compared to latex and needs a daily fluff, but the removable fill, replaceable refills, and near-zero 60-night loft loss make it the best value in the category at $89.
How much fill should I remove?
Back sleepers usually land two to three cups down from factory. Side sleepers with broad shoulders often keep it all. Give each setting three nights before adjusting again — your neck adapts slower than you'd expect.
Can you wash the whole Coop pillow?
No. Wash the Lulltra cover on cold and tumble low. The inner fill bag should only be air-fluffed; a wet wash mats the shredded foam and it does not fully recover.
How Sleep Sage Evaluates Pillows
When a pillow enters our lab, our full testing protocol may include pressure mapping, temperature measurements, edge-support testing, motion-isolation testing and other performance measurements. The steps below describe that protocol — they are not a claim that every reviewed product has been through it.
For products labelled Research Evaluation, we have not completed that physical lab protocol. Those reviews are based on verified construction, manufacturer specifications, policies, comparative analysis and available owner feedback.
Lab Tested: This pillow completed our physical testing protocol. The measurements published for it come from that testing.
Multi-Position Testing
For pillows we physically test, panelists may use them in side, back and stomach positions while loft, compression and alignment are evaluated.
Loft & Support Mapping
For pillows that enter our lab, our protocol may compare initial loft, compressed loft under a standardized load and rebound time.
Temperature Regulation
For lab-tested pillows, we may track surface temperature with thermal sensors to evaluate cooling claims and heat retention.
Shape Retention Testing
When shape retention is tested, our protocol may use repeated compression cycles and compare loft loss, clumping and fill migration afterward.
Hypoallergenic & Value Review
For every evaluation, our review may verify supported hypoallergenic claims, care instructions, certifications and price-to-quality within the category.
