    How to Choose a White Noise Machine

    A white noise machine does one job: raise the background sound floor so sudden noises — a door, a partner's snore, a car on a wet street — no longer stand out sharply enough to pull you out of light sleep. It does not make a room quieter. It makes the room's noise more even, and evenness is what the sleeping brain ignores.

    That distinction decides which machine is right for you. If your problem is an intermittent noise, almost any decent unit helps. If your problem is a loud, low-frequency neighbour or road, you need real output and low-frequency energy — which is a much smaller set of machines.

    Fan-based vs. digital loop

    Mechanical fan units produce genuinely random air noise, so there is nothing to notice. Digital units play a recorded sample; short samples can develop an audible seam that some sleepers latch onto once they hear it.

    • Pink noise — treble rolled off, similar to steady rain. The most broadly comfortable choice and the one most people can sleep through night after night.
    • Brown (red) noise — heavily low-weighted, closer to distant thunder or a waterfall. Best against traffic rumble, bass from a neighbour, and the low band of a snore.

    Placement matters as much as the machine

    Sound masking works on relative level at the ear, so a machine placed between you and the noise source performs better than one on the far nightstand. Put it near the wall, window or door the noise comes through rather than beside your head, and you can often run it at a lower, less fatiguing volume.

    For a shared bed, one unit centred at the foot of the bed usually beats two units — two independent sources create a wandering sound field that some sleepers find more distracting than the original noise.

    Volume, hearing safety and children

    There is a genuine safety limit here. Extended exposure above roughly 85 dB risks hearing damage, and infant sound machines placed inside a crib can exceed that at the ear. Pediatric guidance is to keep the machine well away from the crib and run it at a moderate level — a conversational volume across the room, not a roar next to the mattress.

    For adults, the practical target is just loud enough to bury the intrusion and no louder. If you have to raise your voice to talk over it, it is too loud.

    When a machine is the wrong fix

    Masking helps with noise. It does not help with a room that is too warm, a partner whose snoring signals untreated sleep apnea, or a body clock pushed out of phase by shift work. If you are waking without an obvious noise trigger, treat the underlying cause first — a machine layered on top of an unsolved problem just adds a bill.
