Layla Kapok Pillow Overview
The Layla Kapok Pillow blends soft kapok fiber with copper-infused shredded memory foam for a down-like surface over adjustable foam support, without the hot spot typical of shredded foam pillows.
Our Review
The Layla Kapok Pillow is one of the only pillows on the market using kapok — a buttery-soft, plant-based silk fiber harvested from kapok tree pods. Mixed with copper-infused shredded memory foam, it offers down-like softness with the antimicrobial benefits and cooling of copper. The fully adjustable design lets you remove fill via the inner zipper.
Our Hands-On Experience
Kapok plus copper-infused shredded memory foam is an unusual blend that solves two problems at once. Kapok gives the pillow a soft, down-like top that memory foam cannot produce on its own; the foam underneath provides the structure kapok lacks.
Copper is included as an antimicrobial and conductive additive. We would not buy this pillow for the copper claims alone, but the practical result — a shredded foam pillow that did not develop a hot spot under the head — was consistent across our testing.
It is fully adjustable through a zippered cover, arrives over-filled, and at $109 sits mid-market. It is the pillow to pick if you want the plush surface of a down-alternative with the adjustability and support of shredded foam underneath.

Removed about a third of the fill and it's perfect for my side-sleeping preferences. Love that it's plant-based.
Layla Kapok Pillow: Lab Results & Long-Term Testing
Tested September 3, 2026 by BT/MR. Verified on laylasleep.com on September 3, 2026.
Measured in our lab
Kapok fiber blended with shredded memory foam, fully adjustable via a zipper, and copper-infused on the cover.
| Metric | Result | Category avg. | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loft, factory fill | 6.4 in | 5.0 in | The tallest factory loft in this round. Nearly everyone will remove fill. |
| Loft, half fill removed | 3.8 in | — | The range here is unusually wide, which is the pillow's best feature. |
| Surface temp rise (60 min) | 5.4°F | 6.4°F | Kapok breathes; the memory foam portion is what keeps it from scoring better. |
| Loft loss after 60 nights | 8% | 11% | Kapok compresses more than latex. Daily fluffing is not optional. |
Our long-term sleep log
60 nights with two testers of very different sizes to exercise the fill range.
Night 1
Enormous out of the bag. Both testers removed fill before sleeping on it.
Week 2
Kapok clumps if you don't fluff. Two minutes in the dryer on air-fluff resets it completely.
Week 6
Larger tester settled at roughly three-quarters fill, smaller tester at half.
Night 60
8% loft loss, fully recoverable with a dryer fluff.
Care, washing & durability
The cover is machine washable. The kapok-and-foam fill is not, but unlike most shredded fills it tolerates a periodic 10-minute air-fluff cycle in the dryer, which is the maintenance this pillow needs.
Kapok is a plant fiber and it will slowly compress over the years. Layla doesn't sell refills, which is the one place the Coop has a structural advantage.
The bottom line
The widest loft range of any pillow we test, and the pick for someone who genuinely doesn't know what loft they need. Requires more maintenance than shredded latex or foam.
How Sleep Sage Evaluates Pillows
When a pillow enters our lab, our full testing protocol may include pressure mapping, temperature measurements, edge-support testing, motion-isolation testing and other performance measurements. The steps below describe that protocol — they are not a claim that every reviewed product has been through it.
For products labelled Research Evaluation, we have not completed that physical lab protocol. Those reviews are based on verified construction, manufacturer specifications, policies, comparative analysis and available owner feedback.
Lab Tested: This pillow completed our physical testing protocol. The measurements published for it come from that testing.
Multi-Position Testing
For pillows we physically test, panelists may use them in side, back and stomach positions while loft, compression and alignment are evaluated.
Loft & Support Mapping
For pillows that enter our lab, our protocol may compare initial loft, compressed loft under a standardized load and rebound time.
Temperature Regulation
For lab-tested pillows, we may track surface temperature with thermal sensors to evaluate cooling claims and heat retention.
Shape Retention Testing
When shape retention is tested, our protocol may use repeated compression cycles and compare loft loss, clumping and fill migration afterward.
Hypoallergenic & Value Review
For every evaluation, our review may verify supported hypoallergenic claims, care instructions, certifications and price-to-quality within the category.
