Cross-cut Memory Foam & Microfiber Blend
Memory foam is the most common pillow fill and the most misunderstood. Solid contour blocks hold one fixed shape and loft; shredded fill can be added or removed until the height matches your shoulder. Here are the memory foam pillows we keep recommending, and which format fits which sleeper.
Solid blocks give consistent, repeatable support; shredded fill lets you dial loft to your own shoulder width
Shredded = adjustableSide sleepers usually need 5-7 in of loft to keep the neck level; back sleepers do better at 3-5 in
Position-dependentDense closed-cell foam restricts airflow. Graphite, gel infusions, and shredded structures all help, but latex still runs cooler
Look for open-cell or shredded💡 Expert Tip: If you are between sizes or you switch positions during the night, buy shredded rather than solid. A shredded pillow you can unzip and empty by a handful solves loft mismatch, which is the single most common reason a pillow gets returned. A solid contour block that is 1 inch too tall cannot be fixed.

| Your Build | Ideal Loft | Ideal Firmness |
|---|---|---|
| Side sleeper, broad shoulders | 6-7 in | Firm, shredded so you can top up |
| Side sleeper, average build | 5-6 in | Medium-firm |
| Back sleeper | 4-5 in | Medium, contour works well |
| Stomach sleeper | 2-3 in | Soft, remove fill aggressively |
Shredded is the safer buy for most people because you can add or remove fill to match your shoulder height. Solid contour foam is better if you want the same shape every night and already know the loft that works for you, which is usually the case for dedicated back sleepers.
They run warmer than latex or down because dense foam restricts airflow. Shredded fill, open-cell structures, graphite or gel infusion, and a breathable cover all reduce the effect. If heat is your main complaint, a latex or gel pillow is the more reliable fix than a memory foam pillow with a cooling cover.
Two to three years for most, longer for high-density solid blocks. Replace it when the foam stays compressed in the morning instead of springing back, or when you start waking with neck stiffness you did not have before.
Off-gassing from the foam manufacturing process. Unbag it, leave it in a ventilated room, and the smell typically fades within 24-72 hours. It is normal and not a defect.
