Why total darkness is worth the effort
Sleeping in even moderate room light is associated with lighter, more fragmented sleep and measurable overnight changes in heart rate and glucose handling. You do not need a laboratory to feel it: streetlight through thin curtains, a charging LED, or a partner's screen are enough to pull you out of deep sleep repeatedly without ever fully waking you.
A mask solves this for one person without renegotiating the room. That is why it beats blackout curtains for anyone sharing a bedroom with a different schedule, and why it is the standard tool for shift workers and frequent travellers.
