Infant sleep safety starts with one rule: the mattress must be firm, flat, and fit the crib with no gaps. Here is how to choose a crib mattress that meets those rules and still feels right for your nursery.
A baby's head should not sink in. Press with two fingers; the surface should spring back immediately.
Non-negotiable for infantsNo more than two fingers of space between the mattress edge and the crib frame on any side.

Firm enough that the surface does not conform to a baby's head. The two-finger test is the practical rule: press the center and edges with two fingers; if it springs back immediately and you cannot press more than about half an inch, it is firm enough. Soft mattresses increase the risk of suffocation and are not safe for infants under 12 months.
For an infant, no. Babies are very light and need a flat, unyielding surface to keep airways open. Many parents mistake a correctly firm crib mattress for a board. The mattress will soften slightly with use, but it should never feel plush or marshmallow-like in the first year.
A standard US crib mattress measures roughly 27.25 inches wide by 51.625 inches long and is no more than 6 inches thick. The fit inside the crib should be tight: you should not be able to fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the crib frame on any side.
Breathable mattresses are designed so air can pass through the surface if a baby rolls face-down. They are a useful extra layer of reassurance but are not a substitute for safe sleep practices: always place babies on their backs on a firm, flat surface with no loose bedding, bumpers, or toys.
Organic certification matters if you want to avoid polyurethane foams, chemical flame retardants, and certain adhesives. Look for GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) for fabrics and GOLS for latex. A mattress labeled only natural or green is not the same as certified organic.
Replace it when it shows visible sagging, the cover is torn, the seams are splitting, or it fails the two-finger firmness test. For a mattress used daily, plan on replacing it before the second child; hand-me-downs are only safe if they are still firm and clean.
