From the moment I unboxed the Amerisleep AS1, its firmness was immediately apparent, living up to its 8.0/10 rating. The Bio-Pur foam cover felt noticeably denser than most memory foams I've tested, suggesting a durable build. My initial impression was that this mattress isn't for those who enjoy a plush feel, as there was minimal give when I first lay down, more akin to a compacted foam. The overall construction seemed solid and well-stitched, with no loose threads or chemical off-gassing that lingered for more than an hour or two.
During my 30-night test period, the AS1 truly shined for back and stomach sleeping. My spinal alignment felt exceptional; I measured less than 0.5 inches of lumbar sinkage when on my back, which means my lower back didn't sag at all.
However, side sleepers should steer clear of the AS1. There simply wasn't enough contouring or pressure relief for proper side alignment, and anyone under 130 lbs might find it too unyielding, even for back sleeping. It's truly a niche product tailored for specific sleep needs.
Considering its $1049 price point for a queen, the AS1 offers a solid value for its targeted audience, especially when compared to similar firm specialty foams that often start $200 higher. Amerisleep provides a standard 100-night sleep trial, which is adequate to determine if the firmness level is right for you, and a 20-year warranty, which is more generous than many competitors' 10-year offerings. For dedicated back and stomach sleepers, this mattress delivers on its promise of firm, consistent support.

At 8 out of 10 on our firmness scale, the AS1 is one of the firmest memory-foam beds sold direct-to-consumer. Stomach sleepers over 150 pounds are the core audience — the thin Bio-Pur comfort layer keeps hips from dipping, which is the single biggest cause of lower-back pain in that position.
Side sleepers should look elsewhere. Even lightweight side sleepers who sometimes enjoy a firm bed will find the AS1 creates pressure at the shoulder within a few weeks. The AS3 or AS4 exists for exactly that sleeper.
Bio-Pur foam versus traditional memory foam
Amerisleep replaces a portion of the petroleum in its comfort foam with plant-derived oils, and the practical result is a foam that's more responsive and sleeps cooler than classic visco memory foam. You still get contouring, but you don't get the stuck-in-the-mud feeling.
The 20-year warranty is double the industry standard, though it prorates after year 10. In our tracking, Bio-Pur holds its loft well — the AS1's firm feel is also inherently more durable because there's simply less soft foam to compress.

Perfect firmness for my back
After years of waking up with lower back pain, the AS1 has been a revelation. The firm support keeps my spine aligned all night. I'm a strict back sleeper and this mattress was made for me.
Finally no more morning back pain
Most mattresses let my hips sink too much when I sleep on my stomach. The AS1 keeps everything level. It's firm but not uncomfortable — the memory foam still gives a little cushion on top.
Cooler than expected for memory foam
