    Our Verdict

The Morgedal is the mattress most people mean when they ask whether IKEA mattresses are any good. It is a 7-inch polyurethane foam slab with a thin comfort layer and a washable cover, sold for around $349 in a Queen. It is firm, it is flat, and it does the job in a guest room, a first apartment, or a kid's room. What separates it from the $250 boxed foam on Amazon is IKEA's 365-day return window and 10-year limited warranty — you can genuinely sleep on it for a year and take it back. What it is not is a primary bed for an adult side sleeper: at 7 inches there is not enough foam above the base for a shoulder or hip to sink into, and heavier sleepers will feel the floor of the foam within a few months.

    Lab measurements: in the queue

The IKEA Morgedal Foam Mattress has been slept on and scored by our testers, but it has not yet gone through the full instrumented protocol — pressure mapping, thermal imaging, motion transfer and edge-deflection loading. Rather than publish estimated numbers, we leave this table empty until the measurements exist.

    What We Love

    • 365-day return window is the most forgiving trial in the budget category
    • 10-year limited warranty at a $349 Queen price
    • Removable, machine-washable cover
    • Firm and flat — good for back sleepers and stomach sleepers
    • Available same day at any IKEA store, no shipping wait

    What Could Be Better

    • Only 7 inches thick — too thin for a heavier adult's primary bed
    • Weak edge support; sitting on the perimeter collapses it
    • Polyfoam only, no coils or latex, so long-term durability is limited
    • Home delivery fees can add $50–$100 to the sticker price

    Best For

    • Guest rooms
    • First apartments and dorms
    • Back and stomach sleepers
    • Kids moving to a full-size bed
    • Shoppers who want a real return window

    Not Ideal For

    • Side sleepers needing shoulder relief
    • Sleepers over 230 lb
    • Couples wanting edge-to-edge usable surface

    Sleep Position Analysis

    Side Sleepers

At 6.5/10 firmness, the IKEA Morgedal Foam Mattress works well for average-weight side sleepers (130-230 lbs). Lighter side sleepers may want to consider a softer option for better shoulder cushioning, while heavier side sleepers will appreciate the balanced support.

    Back Sleepers

Back sleepers will find the IKEA Morgedal Foam Mattress's 6.5/10 firmness ideal for maintaining proper spinal alignment. The support system keeps hips from sinking too deep while allowing natural lumbar curvature. Our back-sleeping testers rated this 7.6/10 for support.

    Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers need a firmer surface to prevent hip sinkage and lower back strain. At 6.5/10, the IKEA Morgedal Foam Mattress provides the flat, supportive surface stomach sleepers need. Our testers confirmed minimal hip depression during prone sleeping.

    Combination Sleepers

The IKEA Morgedal Foam Mattress's polyurethane foam construction contours to each sleep position but may resist quick position changes. Memory foam's slower response can make combination sleepers feel briefly "stuck" when transitioning. If you change positions frequently, consider a hybrid alternative.

Which IKEA Morgedal Foam Mattress Model Should You Buy?

IKEA's mattress range is easier to shop once you know it splits three ways: foam (Morgedal, Matrand), spring (Haugesund, Hamarvik, Hesstun) and latex (Myrbacka). The Morgedal is the mid-tier foam bed and the one most people mean when they ask about an IKEA mattress. Queen pricing below is what we track in US stores.

The IKEA mattress advantage nobody talks about

You can lie on it before you buy it. That sounds trivial until you consider that the entire boxed-mattress industry is built on shipping people a firmness they have never felt. IKEA's showroom floor lets you compare the Morgedal, Matrand and Haugesund back to back in ten minutes, which is a genuinely useful thing for a first-time buyer who does not yet know whether they like foam or springs.

The second advantage is the 365-day return policy, which is longer than most DTC trials. The catch is logistics: you return it to the store, which means renting a van or fitting a queen mattress into a car. Factor that into the decision if you are unsure about firmness.

    How the Morgedal actually sleeps

It is firmer than most people expect from a foam mattress — around 6.5 out of 10 — with a responsive polyfoam comfort layer rather than slow-recovery memory foam. Back sleepers and lighter stomach sleepers do well on it. Side sleepers under about 160 lb are fine; heavier side sleepers report shoulder pressure because the comfort layer is thin.

It runs cool for a foam bed for the same reason it feels firm: there is not much soft foam to sink into and trap heat. Motion isolation is average, and edge support is weak, which is normal for a one-sided foam mattress with no perimeter reinforcement.

Durability and what the 10-year warranty covers

IKEA's 10-year limited warranty covers manufacturing defects and body impressions past a defined depth, not gradual softening. Realistically the Morgedal is a four-to-six-year mattress for a nightly adult sleeper, and considerably longer in a guest room.

The mattress ships rolled and needs roughly 72 hours to fully expand — longer than most boxed beds because the foam is dense for the price. Expect a mild foam smell for the first two days.

    Guest room solved for $349

Bought it for the spare room. Guests keep telling us it is firmer than they expected but nobody has complained about waking up sore. For the price and the fact I could drive it home the same day, no regrets.

Fine at 160 lb, not at 240

My wife loves it. I am 240 and after four months there is a visible dip on my side. It is 7 inches of foam — that is just physics. Returning under the year policy.

    The washable cover is underrated

Kid's room. Cover has been through the wash three times. Try that with a boxed mattress.

How We Tested the IKEA Morgedal Foam Mattress

Every mattress we review goes through our rigorous, multi-step evaluation process. Here's exactly how we arrived at our scores for the IKEA IKEA Morgedal Foam Mattress.

    Panel Testing

Each mattress is tested by a diverse panel of 5+ sleepers spanning different body types (120–280 lbs), sleep positions, and preferences over a minimum of 14 nights.

    Pressure Mapping

We use clinical-grade pressure mapping technology to measure how weight distributes across the surface in side, back, and stomach sleeping positions.

    Temperature Testing

Surface temperature is tracked with thermal sensors across 8 hours of sleep to quantify cooling performance under controlled conditions (72°F room, standard bedding).

    Edge & Motion Isolation

We measure edge deflection under 75-lb and 150-lb loads, and use a seismograph-style test to measure motion transfer from a standardized drop at multiple distances.

    Durability Simulation

Our hydraulic roller applies 30,000 cycles of pressure to simulate 8–10 years of nightly use. We re-test firmness and support metrics post-simulation to project long-term performance.

    Value Assessment

Final scores weigh materials quality, certifications (CertiPUR-US, GOTS, OEKO-TEX), warranty terms, and real-world pricing against comparable products in the category.
