Latex is the material that does this

Firming a bed means adding a layer that pushes back. Latex is elastic — it compresses and immediately returns — so a firm latex topper genuinely raises the effective firmness of the surface. Dense high-density polyfoam can do something similar in a thinner sheet.

Memory foam cannot, whatever the label says. Its defining behaviour is slow compression under sustained load, so it conforms to the sag underneath rather than resisting it. A 'firm' memory foam topper feels firm for the first few minutes of lying down and then settles.

Thinner is better here

For softening a bed, thickness helps. For firming one, it usually does not. A thick firm layer sits on top of a soft mattress like a plank on a sponge — it flexes as a whole and the bed still feels unstable underneath.

Two inches of genuinely firm material sits closer to the support core and feels more solid than three inches of the same thing. If a two-inch firm topper does not fix it, the mattress is the problem.

Of the 16 toppers in our database, only the ones sold at 6/10 or firmer appear here. We would rather publish a short honest list than pad it with medium toppers that will disappoint someone trying to firm up a sagging bed.

Durability carries real weight on this page. A firm topper works by resisting compression, so a material that softens over a year stops doing its job entirely — unlike a plush topper, which merely feels a bit different.

Where a topper is sold in several firmnesses, it qualifies on its firm option only. Buy that option; the medium version of the same product will not do this job.
