Best Mattress Topper for Heavy People

Heavier sleepers fail toppers in two ways: they compress straight through a thin one to the mattress below, and they wear out a low-density one within a year. Depth, support and durability are all eligibility gates on this page, applied before anything is ranked.

Topper scores on this page are editorial evaluations based on construction, published specifications, materials and owner feedback. Toppers do not go through the physical mattress lab protocol we use for mattresses, so nothing here is presented as a measurement.

What had to be true to qualify

  • At least 3 inches of material in a buyable thickness. Thinner toppers compress completely under concentrated load and you end up on the mattress anyway.
  • A support evaluation of at least 8.5/10 and a durability evaluation of at least 8.5/10.
  • No loose-fill wool or down. Those materials flatten under sustained load and no maker publishes a density or weight rating for them.

Ranked by support (40%) and durability (40%) equally, with overall quality (20%) and a price adjustment.

Select High Density Mattress Topper mattress topper
Editorial evaluation

Select High Density Mattress Topper

ViscoSoft · 4-lb density gel-infused memory foam · 3 inches · Medium (5/10)

8.7/10

The Select High Density is the rare sub-$250 topper built with true 4-pound memory foam — twice the density of the Amazon basics it competes with. That density is why it holds its loft for years instead of pancaking in 18 months. Gel infusion and a breathable bamboo-rayon cover keep it a couple degrees cooler than solid foam, and the adjustable straps actually keep it in place.

Pressure relief: 9/10
Support: 8.8/10
Cooling: 8/10
Durability: 9/10

Saatva · Graphite-Infused Memory Foam · 3 inches · Medium Soft (4/10)

8.8/10

Saatva's graphite-infused memory foam topper solves the main complaint about memory foam — heat. The graphite naturally conducts heat away from the body, and the organic cotton cover adds breathability. At 3 inches with a medium-soft feel, it's ideal for adding plush comfort to a firm mattress.

Pressure relief: 9/10
Support: 8.5/10
Cooling: 8.8/10

Bottoming out is the thing to avoid

A topper distributes your weight over its full depth. If it is too thin or too soft for your body, you compress it completely at the hips and shoulders and rest on the firm mattress underneath — with an extra heat-trapping layer on top and no pressure relief at all.

Three inches is the practical floor above roughly 230 lbs, and density matters as much as depth. A three-inch topper at 3 lb per cubic foot compresses about as far as a two-inch topper at 5 lb; the denser one holds you higher and keeps holding you for longer.

Check the mattress before you buy a topper

Heavier sleepers wear out mattresses faster, so the odds that the real problem is a failing support core are higher. If there is a visible dip, or the edge collapses when you sit on it, a topper is money spent on the wrong layer — it will settle into the same shape.

Where a topper does work well is on a mattress that is still flat but has gone hard, or on a firm mattress bought deliberately for support that now needs a comfort layer on top.

How we ranked these toppers

We gate all 16 toppers in our database on depth, support and durability first. Pressure relief is not the lead factor here because a heavier sleeper's problem is usually bottoming out, not insufficient softness.

Durability is weighted as heavily as support because the common failure for heavier sleepers is not day-one comfort but a body impression that appears within months. Higher-density latex and 4 lb-plus foam are the constructions that survive.

Where a maker publishes a foam density or a weight rating, we use it. Where they do not — which is most of the market — we say so rather than estimating a number.

Topper scores on this page are editorial evaluations based on construction, published specifications, materials and owner feedback. Toppers do not go through the physical mattress lab protocol we use for mattresses, so nothing here is presented as a measurement.
