    Vispring Diamond Majesty

The strongest pressure relief among the hand-built beds that clear our rules, at $44,000 Queen. Deliberately held out of the main ranking because it is not a realistic purchase for most buyers.

A medium soft 5.5/10 innerspring build. This model has not completed our physical lab testing protocol, so its pressure-relief score comes from a research evaluation of the manufacturer's published comfort-layer construction rather than a pressure map we recorded.

The Diamond Majesty is Vispring's answer to the question of what a mattress looks like when cost is removed from the design brief. It stacks three layers of hand-nested calico pocket springs — a configuration almost no other manufacturer attempts because of the labor involved — beneath comfort layers of British fleece wool, Shetland wool, hand-opened Moosburger horsetail, cashmere, and silk. The triple-spring stack does something a single spring layer cannot: the upper layer contours finely to shoulders and hips while the lower layers handle deep support, so the bed is simultaneously softer at the surface and more supportive underneath than any two-layer design we have tested. Starting around $44,000 for the mattress in King (and considerably more with the matching divan), this is a purchase for buyers comparing it against the Hästens 2000T and Vividus, and against a Savoir No. 1. On pure spring sophistication it arguably leads that group; the Hästens counters with superior moisture handling from horsehair, and Savoir with bespoke sizing. It is sold only through Vispring retailers with custom spring-tension selection, and production takes six to eight weeks.

    Pros

    • Three hand-nested spring layers — the most sophisticated spring architecture on the market
    • Cashmere, silk, Shetland wool and horsetail comfort layers
    • Exceptional surface softness without sacrificing deep support
    • 30-year guarantee, hand-made in Plymouth, England

    Cons

    • $44,000+ is rarified even within ultra-luxury
    • Six-to-eight-week production lead time
    • Retail availability limited to major metro showrooms
    • Value score is inherently weak at this altitude — you are buying the best, not a bargain

    Why Pressure Relief Matters

Lying down puts your whole body weight through a handful of contact points. When a surface cannot spread that load, pressure concentrates at the shoulder, hip and sometimes the outside of the knee — and the usual result is not dramatic pain but repeated small position changes through the night that you may never remember in the morning.

    • Shoulder and hip load. Side sleeping puts the widest parts of the body against the surface, so pressure relief matters more in that position than in any other.
    • Numbness and tingling. A surface that holds a contact point above the rest of the body is the common cause of an arm that goes dead overnight.
    • Fewer position changes. Spreading load means less need to roll away from a hot spot, which is what most people describe as sleeping "deeply".
    • Existing joint pain. If a shoulder or hip already hurts, a surface that concentrates load there makes getting comfortable harder.

    How We Measure Pressure

For mattresses that have completed our physical protocol, we record peak pressure at the shoulder with a side-lying 165 lb subject on an XSensor pressure-mapping pad, reported in millimetres of mercury as the median of three trials in our 68°F lab. Lower readings mean load is being spread rather than concentrated. We use 32 mmHg, the commonly cited capillary-closure reference, as the line we compare readings against — it is a reference point, not a medical claim about any individual sleeper.

The 165 lb standardized reading is the input to the pressure-relief score, which is the primary factor in this ranking. Supplementary runs at other body weights inform the body-weight guidance below but do not replace the standardized figure. Overall score, support and cooling come next, so a bed cannot win on softness alone while failing everywhere else, and value acts as the tie-breaker between beds that measure the same.

Models that have not been through the physical protocol carry a research evaluation instead: a score derived from the manufacturer's published comfort-layer construction — foam density and thickness, zoning, coil gauge under the shoulder — never from a pressure map we did not record. The table and each write-up say which applies, and those models show "Not lab measured" in the mmHg column.

Pressure Relief vs. Firmness vs. Support

Softer surfaces usually relieve pressure better, but softness on its own is not pressure relief — a cheap soft foam bed can let the hips drop so far that the spine bends, which trades one problem for another. What actually works is a comfort layer that contours at the shoulder over a support core that refuses to give way at the pelvis.

That is why this ranking weighs support alongside pressure relief rather than simply ordering the field by softness, and why the list below spans several firmness levels. Zoned constructions do particularly well here: they can be soft where the shoulder lands and firmer under the hips at the same time.

    Pressure Relief for Side Sleepers

Side sleeping is the position where pressure relief decides comfort, because the shoulder and hip carry the load on a narrow footprint. Look for a surface soft enough to let the shoulder settle in without the waist losing contact. The Helix Midnight Luxe is our pick here: 9.4/10 pressure relief at 5.5/10 firmness. Our best mattresses for side sleepers guide weighs pressure relief alongside alignment and body weight.

Pressure Relief for Shoulder and Hip Pain

When a joint already hurts, the measured number matters more than the adjective on the box. The lowest peak shoulder readings in our data come from deep contouring comfort layers over zoned support. The Saatva Classic measured 28 mmHg at the shoulder, the lowest among the beds eligible for this list. See also our best mattresses for shoulder pain and best mattresses for hip pain.

    Pressure Relief for Heavier Sleepers

Above roughly 230 lb, comfort layers compress further before they start spreading load, so a bed that maps well at 165 lb can bottom out. The core underneath has to hold, which is why this award requires a support score of 9/10 or better rather than pressure relief alone. See our best mattresses for heavy people.

    Pressure Relief for Lightweight Sleepers

Under about 130 lb, the opposite problem applies: there may not be enough body weight to compress a firm comfort layer at all, so the surface stays flat and pressure concentrates rather than spreading. Softer, more responsive builds usually map better at this weight. Suited to lighter bodies in this list: Helix Midnight Luxe. Our best soft mattresses guide covers this in more detail.

    How This Ranking Is Built

    • Eligibility comes before ranking. A mattress must be currently available and score at least 8.5/10 for pressure relief. Nothing below that line can appear, whatever its overall score.
    • Pressure relief is the primary factor, with overall score, support and cooling as secondaries and value as the tie-breaker.
    • Price is a real factor. The main ranking is capped at our mainstream price ceiling, so a bed almost nobody buys cannot become the default answer. Exceptional beds above that line are recognised separately as the luxury pick.
    • Testing status is stated openly. Lab-tested models carry a measured peak shoulder-pressure reading; the rest are research evaluations scored from published comfort-layer construction and labelled as such.

    Pressure Relief FAQs

What is pressure relief on a mattress?

Pressure relief is how well a mattress spreads your body weight instead of concentrating it at the contact points — mainly the shoulder and hip. In our lab we map it with an XSensor pad, recording peak pressure at the shoulder for a side-lying 165 lb subject in millimetres of mercury, taken as the median of three trials. Lower readings mean load is being distributed rather than held on one spot.

What is a good pressure relief score?

On our 1–10 scale, 8.5 and above is the bar a mattress has to clear to be ranked on this page at all. Beds at 9.5 or higher combine a deeply contouring comfort layer with a core that still holds the hips up, which is what keeps pressure low without costing alignment.

What does mmHg mean in mattress testing?

Millimetres of mercury is the unit our pressure-mapping pad reports. 32 mmHg is the commonly cited capillary-closure reference point, so readings below it are the ones we treat as genuinely low. It is a reference for comparing mattresses, not a medical threshold for any individual sleeper.

Does a softer mattress always relieve pressure better?

No. Softness helps up to a point, but a soft bed without a firm core lets the pelvis drop, which bends the spine and trades pressure for alignment problems. The builds that measure best pair a contouring comfort layer with a support core that does not give way, often with zoning so the shoulder sinks more than the hips.

Which mattress type has the best pressure relief?

Memory foam and latex comfort layers generally map lowest, and zoned hybrids with those layers over pocketed coils are close behind because they can be soft at the shoulder and firm at the hip at the same time. Type matters less than the individual model — the spread inside each construction is wider than the gap between constructions.

Does body weight change which mattress relieves pressure best?

Yes. Our standardized score comes from a 165 lb subject. Above roughly 230 lb, comfort layers compress further before they spread load, so the support core matters more; under about 130 lb there may not be enough weight to compress a firm surface at all, so softer, more responsive builds usually map better.

How we test mattresses for pressure relief

Reviews combine hands-on lab evaluation for mattresses we have physically tested and clearly labeled research evaluations based on manufacturer specifications, materials analysis, and verified owner feedback for models we have not.

    XSensor pressure mapping

Protocol: Subject lies on their dominant side for 5 minutes to allow material to fully conform, then we capture a 60-second average map. We report peak shoulder mmHg (not average) because peak pressure is what causes capillary closure. That single standardized reading — peak shoulder pressure (mmhg) for a 165 lb side sleeper — is the only pressure figure that feeds the v2.1 score. Supplemental to the score, we also map heavier and lighter body types (145 lb, 195 lb, 245 lb) to show how a bed behaves by weight on category pages; those maps are analysis, not score inputs. Anything under 32 mmHg — the capillary-closure threshold — is a passing reading.

Why it matters: Numbness at the shoulder or hip is the single biggest reason side sleepers wake up. Pressure mapping turns that into a measurable number instead of an opinion.

    Deflectometer + spinal-alignment imaging

Protocol: We use a calibrated deflectometer to measure how far the surface compresses under a 50 lb / 100 lb / 150 lb load across the lumbar zone, then photograph each tester from behind using a grid overlay to verify spinal neutrality within 5° of standing posture.

Why it matters: A mattress that lets the hips sag 1.5" deeper than the shoulders forces the lumbar spine into a curve all night — the #1 mechanical cause of morning back pain.

    Long-term sleep panel

Protocol: Testing duration varies by product and is stated on the individual review only where our records support it. Sleep Sage does not claim a fixed minimum number of nights for every mattress. Where we held a unit long enough for extended sleep testing, testers matched to the category profile logged morning pain scores and sleep-quality ratings nightly, and that duration is stated on the individual review.

Why it matters: Two beds can post identical lab scores and feel completely different after a real week of use. The panel is what catches the edge cases.

Our full testing protocol is documented at sleepsage.com/how-we-test. We accept review units from brands but pay for any product we keep, and rankings cannot be purchased.
