    Trial length is the number brands advertise. The break-in period, the return fee and the exclusions are what actually decide whether you get your money back. Here is all of it, side by side.

    The short answer

    • Almost every brand makes you sleep on the mattress first — 30 nights at most brands, 21 at Purple. A first-week change of mind is not a return.
    • Free returns are common but not universal: Saatva charges $99, Brooklyn Bedding charges $99, and Tempur-Pedic deducts a return shipping fee it does not publish.
    • Retailers often give you an exchange rather than a refund. Mattress Firm and IKEA both work that way.
    • Bases, foundations, closeout mattresses and bedding are routinely excluded from the trial the mattress enjoys.

    How to protect your refund

    Buy the protector with the mattress. Returned mattresses are donated or recycled, not resold, so they have to be clean and undamaged. A single stain is the most common reason a return is refused, and a waterproof protector costs a fraction of the refund it defends.

    Diary two dates the day it arrives: the night the break-in period ends and the night the trial ends. That gap is your entire decision window, and missing the end date is the second most common way people end up keeping a mattress they dislike.

    Keep the delivery confirmation. Several trials run from the delivery date rather than the order date, and the delivery email is your proof of when the clock started.

    Get the fee in writing before collection. When a company does not publish its return fee, ask the agent to confirm the amount by email before you agree to a pickup date.

    Decide by the two-month mark. A 365-night trial is a genuine perk, but the longer you sleep on a mattress the more likely it is to pick up the damage that blocks a return. If it is not working at week eight, it is not going to start.

    Frequently asked questions

    Do I have to sleep on a mattress before I can return it?

    Usually yes. Most brands require a break-in period before a return is accepted: 30 nights at Nectar, Casper, Helix, Tempur-Pedic, Brooklyn Bedding, WinkBed and Avocado, and 21 nights at Purple. Saatva does not impose a hard minimum but advises that adjustment can take up to a month.

    Are mattress returns actually free?

    Not always. Helix and DreamCloud advertise free returns with pickup, while Saatva charges a $99 processing fee and Brooklyn Bedding charges a $99 return fee. Tempur-Pedic refunds your money minus a return shipping fee whose amount it does not publish. Always ask for the fee in writing before you agree to collection.

    Does a stain void a mattress return?

    In practice, very often. Returned mattresses are donated or recycled rather than resold, so brands require the mattress to be clean and undamaged. A waterproof protector bought with the mattress is the cheapest way to protect the refund.

    Does the trial start when I order or when it arrives?

    Delivery, for most brands. Purple counts 100 calendar days from the delivery date, and WinkBed and Brooklyn Bedding both start their 120 nights on the day of delivery. Keep the delivery confirmation email.

    What is the difference between a return and a comfort exchange?

    A return ends with your money back and you free to shop anywhere. A comfort exchange, which is how Mattress Firm frames its 120-night programme and how IKEA frames its 365-day Love it or Exchange it programme, keeps the value with the retailer: you swap for a different mattress rather than take a refund.

    Does the brand trial still apply if I bought from a retailer?

    Not automatically. Tempur-Pedic states plainly that products bought from a retail store follow that retailer's return and exchange policy instead. Some brands selling on Amazon do honour their own trial, but you have to confirm it with the brand before ordering.
