Which sleeping position your hip pain comes from

Side sleeping puts direct compression on the greater trochanter — the bony point at the side of the hip — and that is the most common topper-fixable cause. The fix is depth and softness at the surface, so the joint sinks rather than being pressed.

Back sleeping rarely compresses the hip directly. Pain there usually comes from the pelvis sitting too low, tilting the lower back. The fix is the opposite: more support, not more softness. If your hip hurts on your back, a plush topper will make it worse.

When a topper is the wrong tool

If you can see a dip in the mattress or feel the coils, the support core has failed and a topper will settle into the same dip. You will have added a comfortable layer to a bed that still bends your spine.

If the hip pain is present during the day as well as at night, or wakes you at a consistent time regardless of position, the bed is probably not the cause. A topper is a fair experiment because of the sleep trials, but treat it as an experiment rather than a treatment.
