Best Complete Sleep Setup for Side Sleepers
Side sleeping concentrates your body weight onto two narrow points — the shoulder and the hip — and opens a gap under the waist and the neck. A good side-sleeping bed does two jobs at once: it lets those two points sink, and it fills the two gaps.
That is why the pillow matters as much as the mattress here. A softer mattress lets the shoulder drop, which lowers the head, which means the pillow loft that worked on your old firm bed is now wrong.
Why buy this as a system
Mattress and pillow are a matched pair for side sleepers. Every inch your shoulder sinks into the mattress is an inch of pillow loft you no longer need, so changing one without re-checking the other is how people end up with neck pain on a bed they otherwise like.

1. The mattress: softer, but still supporting
Comfort and pressure relief lead, with support close behind so the hips do not drop through. Most side sleepers land between 4.5 and 6.5 out of 10, with lighter bodies softer and heavier bodies firmer.
Scored from our published mattress ratings, firmness 4–6.5/10. One model per brand.
2. The pillow: fill the neck gap exactly
Side sleeping needs the tallest pillow of any position, because the gap between your ear and the mattress is the width of your shoulder. Adjustable-fill pillows are worth the small premium because that gap changes when the mattress changes.

3. Topper: shoulder relief on a firm bed
If you own a firm mattress and wake with a dead arm or an aching shoulder, a plush topper is the cheapest fix available. Two to three inches is usually enough; more starts to bury the hips.
Scored from our published topper ratings. One model per brand. Full category guide: Best mattress toppers for side sleepers.
4. Sheets: stretch beats thread count
Side sleepers move more than back sleepers and drag the sheet with them. A knit or a well-made percale with deep pockets stays put; a stiff, shallow-pocket sheet pops off the corner every few nights.
Scored from our published sheets ratings. One model per brand. Full category guide: Best sheets.
5. Protector: thin enough to keep the feel
A stiff protector stretched over a plush mattress flattens exactly the surface softness you paid for. Look for a fitted knit face rather than a taut laminated panel.

Re-measure your pillow after the mattress arrives
Lie on your side in your normal position and have someone look at you from the front. Your nose should line up with the centre of your chest, and your neck should be a straight continuation of your spine rather than bending up or down.
If your head tips down toward the mattress, the pillow is too low. If your chin is pushed toward your chest, it is too high. This is the single most common reason a new mattress produces new neck pain.
A pillow between the knees is not optional for most people
Side sleeping lets the top leg fall forward and rotates the pelvis. A knee pillow keeps the hips stacked and is the cheapest component in this entire system.
Watch the hips, not the shoulder
Almost every side sleeper shops for shoulder relief, and almost every side-sleeping failure is at the hips. The hip carries more mass over a smaller area, so a mattress soft enough for the shoulder can let the pelvis drop out of line. Comfort and support ratings both being high is the combination to look for, not comfort alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
How firm should a side sleeper's mattress be?
Most side sleepers do best between about 4.5 and 6.5 out of 10. Lighter bodies need the softer end to get the shoulder to sink at all; heavier bodies need the firmer end so the hips stay level.
How thick should a side sleeper's pillow be?
Tall enough to fill the distance between your ear and the mattress once your shoulder has sunk in — usually higher than a back sleeper needs. Because that distance depends on the mattress, adjustable-fill pillows are the safest choice when you are changing beds.
Do I need both a soft mattress and a topper?
No. A topper is for correcting a mattress you already own that is too firm. Buying a soft mattress and then adding a plush topper usually buries the hips and creates the alignment problem you were avoiding.
Is memory foam or latex better for side sleeping?
Both work. Memory foam contours more deeply around the shoulder and isolates motion better; latex is more responsive and sleeps cooler but relieves pressure through a broader surface rather than a deep cradle. Our published comfort and cooling ratings compare specific models rather than material categories.
