Horsetail hair is the material the whole brand is built around, and its function is ventilation and resilience rather than softness. Each hair is hollow and curled, so a teased layer behaves like thousands of tiny springs that wick moisture away from the sleeper and recover their shape indefinitely. It's why these beds feel springy in a way no foam does, and why they don't hold heat.

It is also enormously labour-intensive. The hair is washed, curled, teased and layered by hand, which is where a large share of the price sits. Whether that is worth the money is a judgment about craftsmanship, not a performance claim — but the material genuinely behaves differently from anything in a boxed mattress.

It is buoyant and lively, closer to a very high-end innerspring than to any modern hybrid. There is no sinking, no slow contour, and no memory foam sensation at all. Sleepers coming from Tempur-Pedic or a plush hybrid frequently find it firmer and more active than expected on the first few nights.

Hästens builds to a chosen firmness at the factory rather than offering a single fixed feel, so the retail consultation matters. Get the firmness wrong at this price and the correction is a manufacturing question, not a return-and-reorder.

The 25-year warranty is the strongest signal the brand offers, and the natural fills genuinely support it: hair, flax and wool don't break down the way polyurethane does. Owners routinely report 20-plus years of use, and the beds are rotatable and serviceable rather than disposable.

Amortized, a $36,000 bed at 25 years is around $4 a night — expensive but not absurd next to replacing a $2,000 mattress five times. That calculation only works if you'd otherwise keep buying premium, and it ignores the opportunity cost of the capital, which at this price is not a rounding error.
