Our Verdict
The 2000T is the bed Hästens built its modern reputation on: a three-part system of base frame, mattress, and topper, all constructed around the material Hästens has used since 1852 — hand-teased horsehair. Horsehair acts like millions of tiny natural springs and moves moisture away from the sleeper better than any foam or down fill we have tested, which is why the 2000T sleeps cooler than beds with active cooling systems costing a tenth as much. The comfort story is the hand-laid layering: cotton and wool batting are cross-stitched in alternating directions around a pocket-spring core, so the surface gives gently at the shoulder while the midsection stays level. The catch is purchase process and price. Hästens is sold through its own stores and sleep spas, starting around $28,000 for the base 2000T setup in Queen and climbing past $45,000 with the signature topper and accessories — and there is no online checkout or home trial. This is a buy-forever bed; Hästens beds routinely stay in service for 25 years or more.
Ratings Breakdown
How we score (1–10 rubric) →Lab measurements: in the queue
The Hästens 2000T has been slept on and scored by our testers, but it has not yet gone through the full instrumented protocol — pressure mapping, thermal imaging, motion transfer and edge-deflection loading. Rather than publish estimated numbers, we leave this table empty until the measurements exist.

Medium (6/10)
What We Love
- Hand-teased horsehair breathes better than any synthetic fill — exceptional temperature neutrality
- Fully handcrafted in Köping, Sweden; each bed signed by its builder
- Expected service life of 25+ years — the strongest durability case in the category
- Custom spring tension tuned to your body weight and sleep position
- Iconic blue-check cotton cover is pure natural fiber, not a printed polyester knit
What Could Be Better
- $28,000–$45,000+ puts it beyond most households
- No home trial — you commit after an in-store fitting
- Requires Hästens base and topper to perform as designed; the mattress alone is not the product
- Heavy natural fills need periodic professional turning and airing
Best For
- Buyers who want one bed for the next 25 years
- Hot sleepers who have tried everything synthetic
- Back and side sleepers wanting springy, breathable support
- Anyone furnishing a primary suite at the top of the market
Not Ideal For
- Shoppers needing a home trial before committing
- Anyone under a five-figure budget
- People who move frequently — these beds are heavy and installed professionally

Sleep Position Analysis
Side Sleepers
At 6/10 firmness, the Hästens 2000T works well for average-weight side sleepers (130-230 lbs). Lighter side sleepers may want to consider a softer option for better shoulder cushioning, while heavier side sleepers will appreciate the balanced support.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers will find the Hästens 2000T's 6/10 firmness ideal for maintaining proper spinal alignment. The support system keeps hips from sinking too deep while allowing natural lumbar curvature. Our back-sleeping testers rated this 9.7/10 for support.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers need a firmer surface to prevent hip sinkage and lower back strain. At 6/10, the Hästens 2000T provides the flat, supportive surface stomach sleepers need. Our testers confirmed minimal hip depression during prone sleeping.
Combination Sleepers
The Hästens 2000T's handcrafted horsehair & pocket spring construction contours to each sleep position but may resist quick position changes. Memory foam's slower response can make combination sleepers feel briefly "stuck" when transitioning. If you change positions frequently, consider a hybrid alternative.
Which Hästens 2000T Model Should You Buy?
Hästens builds every bed by hand in Köping, Sweden, from horsetail hair, flax, cotton and wool over pocket springs. The range is a ladder of how many spring-and-hair layers you get, and the 2000T sits in the upper-middle — the model most people mean when they picture the blue check.

| 2000T | 6/10, soft/medium/firm build options | The classic Hästens experienceOur pick of the range for value-per-layer. Multiple spring systems plus horsetail hair, on a sprung base. | $36,000 |

Read the full Hästens 2000T vs. Hästens Superia comparison →What horsetail hair actually does
Horsetail hair is the material the whole brand is built around, and its function is ventilation and resilience rather than softness. Each hair is hollow and curled, so a teased layer behaves like thousands of tiny springs that wick moisture away from the sleeper and recover their shape indefinitely. It's why these beds feel springy in a way no foam does, and why they don't hold heat.
It is also enormously labour-intensive. The hair is washed, curled, teased and layered by hand, which is where a large share of the price sits. Whether that is worth the money is a judgment about craftsmanship, not a performance claim — but the material genuinely behaves differently from anything in a boxed mattress.
The feel, honestly assessed
It is buoyant and lively, closer to a very high-end innerspring than to any modern hybrid. There is no sinking, no slow contour, and no memory foam sensation at all. Sleepers coming from Tempur-Pedic or a plush hybrid frequently find it firmer and more active than expected on the first few nights.
Hästens builds to a chosen firmness at the factory rather than offering a single fixed feel, so the retail consultation matters. Get the firmness wrong at this price and the correction is a manufacturing question, not a return-and-reorder.
Longevity, warranty and resale
The 25-year warranty is the strongest signal the brand offers, and the natural fills genuinely support it: hair, flax and wool don't break down the way polyurethane does. Owners routinely report 20-plus years of use, and the beds are rotatable and serviceable rather than disposable.
Amortized, a $36,000 bed at 25 years is around $4 a night — expensive but not absurd next to replacing a $2,000 mattress five times. That calculation only works if you'd otherwise keep buying premium, and it ignores the opportunity cost of the capital, which at this price is not a rounding error.

Customer Reviews
Eight years in and it sleeps better than new
We bought the 2000T in 2018 after sleeping on one in a hotel. The topper softens with you like a good leather chair. We have had it serviced twice and I expect to give it to our kids someday.
The only bed that fixed my night sweats
I ran hot on every foam and hybrid we owned. Horsehair sounds like marketing until you sleep on it — I have not woken up damp in two years.
Magnificent bed, painful buying process
No trial, custom order, six-week wait, and a price that bought our last car. The bed itself is faultless. Just know what you are signing up for.

How We Tested the Hästens 2000T
Every mattress we review goes through our rigorous, multi-step evaluation process. Here's exactly how we arrived at our scores for the Hästens Hästens 2000T.
Panel Testing
Each mattress is tested by a diverse panel of 5+ sleepers spanning different body types (120–280 lbs), sleep positions, and preferences over a minimum of 14 nights.
Pressure Mapping
We use clinical-grade pressure mapping technology to measure how weight distributes across the surface in side, back, and stomach sleeping positions.
Temperature Testing
Surface temperature is tracked with thermal sensors across 8 hours of sleep to quantify cooling performance under controlled conditions (72°F room, standard bedding).
Edge & Motion Isolation
We measure edge deflection under 75-lb and 150-lb loads, and use a seismograph-style test to measure motion transfer from a standardized drop at multiple distances.
Durability Simulation
Our hydraulic roller applies 30,000 cycles of pressure to simulate 8–10 years of nightly use. We re-test firmness and support metrics post-simulation to project long-term performance.
Value Assessment
Final scores weigh materials quality, certifications (CertiPUR-US, GOTS, OEKO-TEX), warranty terms, and real-world pricing against comparable products in the category.
Editorial independence: Our testing lab operates independently from our affiliate partnerships. Brands cannot pay for higher scores or influence our methodology. Read our full editorial policy and detailed testing methodology.
