Our Verdict
The Devonshire is Vispring's entry model and the cheapest way to own a genuinely hand-made bed: hand-nested calico pocket springs, hand-teased British fleece wool, and hand side-stitched borders — the same construction language as the flagship Diamond Majesty at a tenth of the price. Vispring invented the pocket spring in 1901 and still makes every mattress in Plymouth, England. The Devonshire's feel is the classic English bed: buoyant, airy, and quietly supportive rather than plush or contouring. The 1,326 hand-nested springs move independently in six turns each, which is why motion isolation rivals good memory foam despite being an all-spring build. Two things to know before buying: the 8.3-inch mattress is designed to sit on a Vispring divan or a properly sprung base — put it on flat slats and you lose half the comfort — and Vispring is sold through retailers, so pricing, trials, and delivery terms vary by store. The 30-year guarantee is transferable through authorized dealers and is unmatched anywhere in the industry.
Ratings Breakdown
How we score (1–10 rubric) →Lab measurements: in the queue
The Vispring Devonshire has been slept on and scored by our testers, but it has not yet gone through the full instrumented protocol — pressure mapping, thermal imaging, motion transfer and edge-deflection loading. Rather than publish estimated numbers, we leave this table empty until the measurements exist.

Medium (6/10)
What We Love
- Hand-nested calico pocket springs — the original pocket-spring maker since 1901
- 30-year guarantee is the longest warranty we have ever verified
- British fleece wool comfort layers breathe and regulate temperature naturally
- Hand side-stitched borders give real edge support without foam rails
- Best value entry into genuine handcraft — half the price of most ultra-luxury rivals
What Could Be Better
- Designed to pair with a divan or sprung base; underperforms on flat platforms
- 8.3 inches is thin-looking on modern tall bed frames
- Sold through retailers only — pricing and trial terms vary by store
- Firm, buoyant English feel won't suit plush-top fans
Best For
- Buyers wanting handcraft quality near the $4,000 mark
- Back and stomach sleepers
- Anyone replacing a traditional sprung bed
- Long-horizon buyers — 30-year guarantee
Not Ideal For
- Plush pillow-top lovers
- Platform-bed owners unwilling to change their base
- Shoppers wanting to buy online and unbox

Sleep Position Analysis
Side Sleepers
At 6/10 firmness, the Vispring Devonshire works well for average-weight side sleepers (130-230 lbs). Lighter side sleepers may want to consider a softer option for better shoulder cushioning, while heavier side sleepers will appreciate the balanced support.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers will find the Vispring Devonshire's 6/10 firmness ideal for maintaining proper spinal alignment. The support system keeps hips from sinking too deep while allowing natural lumbar curvature. Our back-sleeping testers rated this 9.3/10 for support.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers need a firmer surface to prevent hip sinkage and lower back strain. At 6/10, the Vispring Devonshire provides the flat, supportive surface stomach sleepers need. Our testers confirmed minimal hip depression during prone sleeping.
Combination Sleepers
The Vispring Devonshire's handcrafted pocket spring & natural fill construction contours to each sleep position but may resist quick position changes. Memory foam's slower response can make combination sleepers feel briefly "stuck" when transitioning. If you change positions frequently, consider a hybrid alternative.
Which Vispring Devonshire Model Should You Buy?
Vispring has been hand-building pocket-sprung beds in Plymouth, England since 1901 — it invented the pocket spring. The Devonshire is the entry point into the hand-nested range and the model that makes the strongest value case in ultra-luxury.

Read the full Vispring Devonshire vs. Saatva Classic comparison →Hand-nested calico springs and why they feel different
Vispring encases each spring in a calico cotton pocket and hand-nests them, rather than gluing machine-made rows into a unit. Calico is stiffer than the non-woven fabric used in mass-market pocket units, so each spring stays more independent and responds more precisely to the load directly above it.
The result is a surface that follows body contour closely without any foam. Support feels point-specific rather than broad, which is particularly noticeable at the lumbar and the shoulder.
Natural fills and temperature
The Devonshire uses British fleece wool and cotton over the springs. Wool is the best temperature regulator in bedding — it moves moisture away in warmth and insulates in cold — so these beds run genuinely neutral year-round without any cooling technology.
The trade-off is settling. Natural fills compress into body-shaped hollows over the first months. That's expected behaviour, not a fault, and it's why the brand specifies regular rotation.
The value case against far pricier rivals
At roughly $3,950 for a queen, the Devonshire delivers hand-built, natural-fill, made-to-order construction for less than many mass-market luxury hybrids. Compared with a Hästens at three to nine times the price, the material list is shorter — no horsetail hair at this level — but the construction method is comparable.
Buy it made-to-order in the firmness the dealer recommends after you've lain on the range. Vispring builds soft, medium and firm variants, and at this tier that consultation replaces the home trial you'd get from a boxed brand.

Customer Reviews
Slept on one at a B&B, bought one the next week
We own hotels' worth of mattress regret. The Devonshire on its divan feels like the best hotel bed in England, permanently. Sixteen months in, zero complaints.
Buy the divan or don't bother
First two weeks on our old slat frame it felt ordinary. Moved it onto the Vispring divan the retailer recommended and it transformed. The system matters.
Thirty-year warranty sold me
My parents' Vispring is 22 years old and still perfect. That is why I paid $4,000 for an entry model instead of $2,000 for a bed-in-a-box with a 10-year marketing warranty.

How We Tested the Vispring Devonshire
Every mattress we review goes through our rigorous, multi-step evaluation process. Here's exactly how we arrived at our scores for the Vispring Vispring Devonshire.
Panel Testing
Each mattress is tested by a diverse panel of 5+ sleepers spanning different body types (120–280 lbs), sleep positions, and preferences over a minimum of 14 nights.
Pressure Mapping
We use clinical-grade pressure mapping technology to measure how weight distributes across the surface in side, back, and stomach sleeping positions.
Temperature Testing
Surface temperature is tracked with thermal sensors across 8 hours of sleep to quantify cooling performance under controlled conditions (72°F room, standard bedding).
Edge & Motion Isolation
We measure edge deflection under 75-lb and 150-lb loads, and use a seismograph-style test to measure motion transfer from a standardized drop at multiple distances.
Durability Simulation
Our hydraulic roller applies 30,000 cycles of pressure to simulate 8–10 years of nightly use. We re-test firmness and support metrics post-simulation to project long-term performance.
Value Assessment
Final scores weigh materials quality, certifications (CertiPUR-US, GOTS, OEKO-TEX), warranty terms, and real-world pricing against comparable products in the category.
Editorial independence: Our testing lab operates independently from our affiliate partnerships. Brands cannot pay for higher scores or influence our methodology. Read our full editorial policy and detailed testing methodology.
