The Devonshire is Vispring's entry model and the cheapest way to own a genuinely hand-made bed: hand-nested calico pocket springs, hand-teased British fleece wool, and hand side-stitched borders — the same construction language as the flagship Diamond Majesty at a tenth of the price. Vispring invented the pocket spring in 1901 and still makes every mattress in Plymouth, England. The Devonshire's feel is the classic English bed: buoyant, airy, and quietly supportive rather than plush or contouring. The 1,326 hand-nested springs move independently in six turns each, which is why motion isolation rivals good memory foam despite being an all-spring build. Two things to know before buying: the 8.3-inch mattress is designed to sit on a Vispring divan or a properly sprung base — put it on flat slats and you lose half the comfort — and Vispring is sold through retailers, so pricing, trials, and delivery terms vary by store. The 30-year guarantee is transferable through authorized dealers and is unmatched anywhere in the industry.

Calico is stiffer than the non-woven fabric used in mass-market pocket units, so each spring stays more independent and responds more precisely to the load directly above it.
The result is a surface that follows body contour closely without any foam. Support feels point-specific rather than broad, which is particularly noticeable at the lumbar and the shoulder.
Natural fills and temperature
The Devonshire uses British fleece wool and cotton over the springs. Wool is the best temperature regulator in bedding — it moves moisture away in warmth and insulates in cold — so these beds run genuinely neutral year-round without any cooling technology.
The trade-off is settling. Natural fills compress into body-shaped hollows over the first months. That's expected behaviour, not a fault, and it's why the brand specifies regular rotation.
The value case against far pricier rivals
At roughly $3,950 for a queen, the Devonshire delivers hand-built, natural-fill, made-to-order construction for less than many mass-market luxury hybrids. Compared with a Hästens at three to nine times the price, the material list is shorter — no horsetail hair at this level — but the construction method is comparable.
