The Eight Sleep Pod 3 is less a mattress and more a sleep optimization system. The active cooling/heating system pumps water through a grid layer to maintain your ideal temperature — from 55°F to 110°F per side. After three months of use, my sleep data showed a 22% increase in deep sleep duration.
The sleep tracking is impressively detailed: heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, sleep stages, room temperature, and even bed temperature are logged nightly. The app provides a daily 'sleep fitness' score that correlates well with how rested I actually felt.
The dual-zone temperature control is a relationship saver. My partner prefers sleeping at 72°F while I like 65°F. The Pod 3 maintains different temperatures on each side simultaneously. We haven't argued about the thermostat at bedtime since.
The elephant in the room: the $2,795 base price plus ongoing subscription ($199/year for full features) makes this the most expensive sleep solution I've tested. The pump unit produces a faint hum (about 25 dB — quieter than a whisper but detectable in a silent room). And if the technology fails, you're left with an average foam mattress. For sleep-obsessed tech enthusiasts with the budget, it's transformative; for everyone else, there are better values.

Water circulates through channels in the Pod Cover from a bedside Hub that heats or chills it. Each side of the bed is independently controlled between roughly 55°F and 110°F, which is the feature no passive mattress can match: one person can run cold while the other runs warm on the same bed.
The cover also contains sensors that estimate heart rate, respiratory rate and sleep stages, and Autopilot uses that data to adjust temperature through the night — cooler for deep sleep, warmer toward wake time.
The mattress underneath is a competent but unremarkable 11-inch foam build at a medium feel. Nobody buys a Pod for the mattress; you are buying the cover and the software, and the mattress is the delivery mechanism.

Six months of nightly use
Weeks 1–4: the app's temperature schedule takes about two weeks to tune. Our tester ended at 'cool for the first three hours, neutral overnight, warm 30 minutes before alarm' and stopped touching it.
Months 2–4: the Hub requires water top-ups roughly monthly and a cleaning cycle with the supplied solution every few months. Skipping the cleaning is the most common cause of the errors people report.
Month 6: the mattress showed 0.4 inches of impression — average for foam. The cover and hub ran without fault, but note the warranty split: two years on the cover and hub versus ten on the mattress. That gap is the real risk in this purchase.
Who should skip it
Skip the Pod if you and your partner agree on temperature — a $1,249 cooling hybrid will likely solve the problem for a third of the money and nothing can break.
Skip it if a subscription is a dealbreaker; the hardware works at a basic level without Autopilot, but the features people buy it for do not. And skip it if you are noise-sensitive and cannot place the Hub several feet from your head.
Buy it if per-side temperature control is genuinely the problem — menopausal night sweats alongside a partner who runs cold is the textbook case, and nothing passive solves it.
