    Our verdict

The ComfortNext is Sleep Number's mid-range offering, delivering a significant step up from the ComfortMode series. At 12 inches, it features advanced pressure relief targeting hips, shoulders, and knees, plus 50% more built-in cooling materials than the ComfortMode. The dual air chambers provide the same 0-100 adjustability, but the surrounding comfort layers are denser and more refined. Active temperature control is included, allowing the bed to respond to your body temperature. At $2,999, it competes with premium traditional mattresses while offering adjustability they can't match.

    Sleep Number ComfortNext Overview

The Sleep Number ComfortNext is a 12-inch mid-range smart bed at $2,999 with active temperature control, advanced pressure relief for hips/shoulders/knees, and 50% more cooling than the ComfortMode. The start of Sleep Number's premium tier.

    What Our Research Found

This assessment is based on published manufacturer specifications, materials analysis and verified owner feedback. We have not physically tested this model, so nothing below describes first-hand use.

The ComfortNext is where Sleep Number's 2026 lineup gets seriously impressive. The jump from ComfortMode to ComfortNext is bigger than I expected โ€” the comfort layers are noticeably denser and more substantial.

At 12 inches, it has the profile of a premium traditional mattress, but with the adjustability that traditional mattresses can't match. The multi-zone pressure relief targeting hips, shoulders, and knees is effective โ€” during my side-sleeping test, I noticed significantly less pressure on my shoulder compared to the ComfortMode.

The active temperature control is the key differentiator from the ComfortMode series. Instead of just passive cooling materials, the ComfortNext actively responds to your body temperature. In the store demo, I could feel the surface cool down within about 5 minutes of lying down.

    Sleep Position Analysis

    Side Sleepers

The Sleep Number ComfortNext's softer feel (5/10) provides excellent pressure relief for side sleepers. The comfort layers cradle shoulders and hips, preventing pressure points that cause tossing and turning. We recommend this mattress for side sleepers of all body types.

    Back Sleepers

Back sleepers will find the Sleep Number ComfortNext's 5/10 firmness ideal for maintaining proper spinal alignment. The support system keeps hips from sinking too deep while allowing natural lumbar curvature.

    Stomach Sleepers

At 5/10 firmness, the Sleep Number ComfortNext may be too soft for stomach sleepers. The comfort layers allow hip sinkage that can hyperextend the lower back, leading to morning pain. Stomach sleepers should consider a firmer option (7+ on our scale).

    Combination Sleepers

The Sleep Number ComfortNext is an adjustable airbed, so responsiveness depends on the pressure you set rather than on foam or coils. Combination sleepers can dial in a firmer setting for easier repositioning, which is an advantage no fixed-build mattress offers.

Which Sleep Number ComfortNext Model Should You Buy?

The ComfortNext is where Sleep Number's lineup adds active temperature management โ€” a multi-zone pressure-relief stack and a temperature-regulating layer over the standard dual-air core. It's the entry point for buyers who sleep hot.

    The temperature layer, explained

The ComfortNext's active temperature layer moves air through the comfort stack to carry heat away from the sleeper โ€” a middle step between passive cooling covers and the Climate360's full active heating-and-cooling system. It cools; it doesn't warm.

In practice it takes the edge off for moderate hot sleepers. Severe night sweaters should look at the ClimateCool or Climate360, and cool-sleeping buyers should save $1,400 with the ComfortMode.

    Multi-zone pressure relief

Above the air chambers, the ComfortNext adds zoned foam that's softer at the shoulders and firmer under the lumbar โ€” a meaningful upgrade for side sleepers that the ComfortMode line lacks.

Combined with the adjustable air, this makes the ComfortNext the most position-versatile bed in the mid-lineup: set the air for overall firmness, and let the zoning fine-tune pressure points.

    How Sleep Sage Evaluates Mattresses

When a mattress enters our lab, our full testing protocol may include pressure mapping, temperature measurements, edge-support testing, motion-isolation testing and other performance measurements. The steps below describe that protocol โ€” they are not a claim that every reviewed product has been through it.

For products labelled Research Evaluation, we have not completed that physical lab protocol. Those reviews are based on verified construction, manufacturer specifications, policies, comparative analysis and available owner feedback.

Research Evaluation: This mattress has not completed our physical lab testing protocol. Our evaluation is based on verified construction, manufacturer specifications, policies, comparative analysis and available owner feedback.

    Panel Testing

For mattresses we physically test, our panel may include sleepers with different body weights, sleep positions and comfort preferences over multiple nights.

    Pressure Mapping

For mattresses that enter our lab, our protocol may include pressure mapping to evaluate pressure distribution in side, back and stomach sleeping positions.

    Temperature Testing

For lab-tested mattresses, we may track surface temperature with thermal sensors under controlled conditions (68ยฐF room, 45% RH, standard bedding).

    Edge & Motion Isolation

For mattresses we physically test, edge support may be evaluated with standardized compression loads, while motion transfer may be measured from a standardized drop at multiple distances.

    Durability Simulation

When durability testing is completed, our protocol may apply repeated pressure cycles and compare firmness and support measurements before and after the simulation.

    Value Assessment

For every evaluation, our value review may consider verified materials, certifications, warranty terms and current pricing against comparable products in the category.

Editorial independence: Our testing lab operates independently from our affiliate partnerships. Brands cannot pay for higher scores or influence our methodology. Read our full editorial policy and detailed testing methodology.
