The ComfortMode is Sleep Number's most affordable smart bed, replacing the old c-series. This 10-inch hybrid combines Sleep Number's signature adjustable air chambers with built-in cooling materials and pressure-relieving foam. Each side adjusts independently from 0-100 firmness, making it ideal for couples. It includes basic sleep insights via the SleepIQ app. At $1,599, it's the entry point into the Sleep Number ecosystem — offering the core adjustable firmness technology without the premium comfort layers of higher-tier models.

Sleep Number completely overhauled their lineup in 2026, replacing the old c/p/i/m series with three new collections: ComfortMode, ComfortNext, and Climate. The ComfortMode is their entry point, replacing the old c2/c4 models.
I tested the ComfortMode at a Sleep Number store for about 45 minutes. The adjustable firmness is the star feature — clicking between 25 and 75 on the remote, you can feel a clear difference. At 25, it's plush and body-hugging. At 75, it's noticeably firm. For couples, this alone justifies the price.
The 10-inch profile is my main concern. Compared to the 12-14 inch ComfortNext models I tested the same day, the ComfortMode feels thinner and less luxurious. The comfort layers above the air chambers are adequate but not plush. If you can stretch to $2,099 for the Lux, the extra inch and improved hip relief are worth it.

Back sleepers will find the Sleep Number ComfortMode's 5/10 firmness ideal for maintaining proper spinal alignment. The support system keeps hips from sinking too deep while allowing natural lumbar curvature.
Stomach Sleepers
At 5/10 firmness, the Sleep Number ComfortMode may be too soft for stomach sleepers. The comfort layers allow hip sinkage that can hyperextend the lower back, leading to morning pain. Stomach sleepers should consider a firmer option (7+ on our scale).

The core of every Sleep Number bed is the same: two air chambers, one per side, each adjustable across the brand's 0–100 firmness scale, plus SleepIQ sensors that track heart rate, breathing and movement. The ComfortMode includes all of that. What it omits is the active temperature hardware and the thicker pressure-relief stacks of the pricier models.
For couples with different firmness needs, that core is the entire value proposition — no foam mattress at any price can be firm on one side and soft on the other.
The honest caveats
The comfort layer above the air chambers is thin, so the bed feels firmer and less cushioned than a conventional mattress at the same price. Very low Sleep Number settings can also create a slight valley at the center of the bed where the two chambers meet.
Factor the base into your budget: the mattress is designed for Sleep Number's FlexFit bases, and pairing it with a third-party frame complicates warranty coverage. Total cost of ownership is realistically $1,900–$2,600.

Great intro to Sleep Number
My husband likes firm and I like soft. The ComfortMode lets us both be happy without spending $4,000+. The sleep tracking is a nice bonus.
Good but wish it was thicker
The adjustability is great but at 10 inches it feels thinner than I'd like. If budget allows, step up to the ComfortMode Lux for the extra inch.
