The Amerisleep AS5 is the softest and most luxurious mattress in the Amerisleep lineup. With 5 inches of Bio-Pur memory foam, it provides cloud-like cushioning that envelops the body for maximum pressure relief. Despite its plush feel, the pocketed coil base and Active Flex comfort layer prevent the 'quicksand' feeling common in ultra-soft mattresses. It's purpose-built for side sleepers and anyone who wants to feel like they're sleeping on a cloud.

The Amerisleep AS5 is an ultra-soft hybrid mattress featuring 5 inches of Bio-Pur memory foam for deep pressure relief. It combines a plush feel with a responsive pocketed coil base and Active Flex layer to prevent excessive sinkage. Designed primarily for side sleepers, it offers significant cushioning and comfort.
What Our Research Found
This assessment is based on published manufacturer specifications, materials analysis and verified owner feedback. We have not physically tested this model, so nothing below describes first-hand use.
From the moment I unboxed the AS5, it was clear this was a deeply soft bed. The 5 inches of Bio-Pur foam immediately conformed to my hand pressure, and it felt noticeably softer than the AS3 I tested last year. The breathable cover, made with a Celliant blend, felt smooth and cool to the touch, and the initial, faint off-gassing smell dissipated within about 4 hours in a well-ventilated room.
As a side sleeper, this mattress delivered on pressure relief. My shoulders and hips sank in just enough to feel cradled, and I experienced noticeable joint pain reduction compared to my firmer daily driver after just one week. My partner, who usually runs hot, only reported feeling slightly warm one night out of 10, which is a good sign for a bed with this much memory foam. The Active Flex layer really did prevent me from feeling stuck, allowing for easy repositioning during the night.
However, this mattress isn't for everyone. Back and stomach sleepers, especially those over 200 lbs, will likely find it too soft, leading to spinal misalignment. I tested briefly on my stomach, and my hips sank in about 2.5 inches too far for comfortable alignment. If you prefer a firmer, more supportive feel, even the AS4 would be a better option.
At $1699 for a queen, the AS5 is priced competitively for a high-quality hybrid, coming in about $300 less than a comparable Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt Soft. The 100-night sleep trial is standard, and the 20-year warranty is generous. For strict side sleepers who prioritize deep pressure relief and want that 'sleeping on a cloud' sensation without feeling trapped, this mattress is a strong contender and worth considering.

Side Sleepers
The Amerisleep AS5's softer feel (3/10) provides excellent pressure relief for side sleepers. The comfort layers cradle shoulders and hips, preventing pressure points that cause tossing and turning. We recommend this mattress for side sleepers of all body types.
Back Sleepers
The Amerisleep AS5 may be too soft for back sleepers, particularly those over 180 lbs. Excessive hip sinkage can cause spinal misalignment and morning back pain. Lighter back sleepers (under 150 lbs) may still find adequate support.
Stomach Sleepers
At 3/10 firmness, the Amerisleep AS5 may be too soft for stomach sleepers. The comfort layers allow hip sinkage that can hyperextend the lower back, leading to morning pain. Stomach sleepers should consider a firmer option (7+ on our scale).

The problem with very soft memory foam is that it can feel like quicksand — deep sink with no pushback. The AS5's Active Flex layer sits under the Bio-Pur comfort foam and behaves more like latex: it compresses easily but rebounds instantly, so the bed feels plush yet easy to move on.
This matters most for combination sleepers who want softness. Without that layer, a 3/10 bed punishes position changes; with it, the AS5 is one of the few genuinely soft beds we can recommend to restless sleepers.
Who should not buy the AS5
Stomach sleepers and anyone over about 230 pounds should skip it — the soft surface lets hips sink past neutral, which is exactly what causes morning lower-back stiffness. The AS1 or AS2 exists for that sleeper.
Hot sleepers should also pause. Fourteen inches of foam, however breathable, insulates more than a thin hybrid. If you sleep hot and want plush, the AS4 hybrid's coil airflow is the safer route.

Like sleeping on a cloud
I've tried every soft mattress on the market and the AS5 is the best. It's incredibly soft but you don't sink to the bottom. The Active Flex layer gives it a bouncy quality that keeps you floating. Pure luxury.
Life-changing for fibromyalgia
With fibromyalgia, pressure points are my enemy. The AS5 eliminates every single one. I wake up without the all-over soreness for the first time in years. Worth every penny.
Better than our $3,000 Tempur-Pedic
