Our verdict
The Birch Natural is Helix Sleep's organic line and the value leader in certified natural mattresses. It layers GOTS-certified organic cotton, a wool fire barrier, and Talalay latex over individually wrapped steel coils, with no polyurethane foams or chemical flame retardants. The latex gives it a resilient, springy medium-firm (6.5) surface that sleeps cool and suits back sleepers, combination sleepers, and anyone with a latex preference who cannot justify Avocado or Naturepedic pricing. Wool also helps regulate moisture through the night. Expect a firmer, more supportive feel than plush organic pillow tops, and note that the 11-inch profile has limited deep contouring for strict side sleepers. $1,249 queen, 100-night trial, 25-year warranty.
Birch Natural Mattress Overview
The Birch Natural Mattress by Helix offers GREENGUARD Gold certified organic materials with Talalay latex comfort. Our testing confirmed strong back support and breathability, with a firm feel best suited to back sleepers.
Video Review
Our Hands-On Experience
As Helix Sleep's organic sub-brand, Birch benefits from a well-established supply chain and customer service infrastructure. The Talalay latex comfort layer provides that signature responsive bounce, while the organic wool and cotton create a naturally breathable sleep surface.
GREENGUARD Gold certification means this mattress has been tested for low chemical emissions — important for bedrooms where you spend 8 hours breathing close to the surface. I verified the certification is current and covers the specific model I tested.
At 6.5/10 firmness, the Birch skews firm. Back sleepers praised the spinal support, but two of our side-sleeping testers found insufficient shoulder cushioning. The 11-inch profile is thinner than competing organic options, which contributes to the firmer feel.
The 25-year warranty is excellent, and the connection to the Helix brand provides confidence in long-term company stability. At $1,249, it sits in the middle of the organic mattress price spectrum — more affordable than PlushBeds but pricier than Awara.

Sleep Position Analysis
Side Sleepers
At 6.5/10 firmness, the Birch Natural Mattress works well for average-weight side sleepers (130-230 lbs). Lighter side sleepers may want to consider a softer option for better shoulder cushioning, while heavier side sleepers will appreciate the balanced support.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers will find the Birch Natural Mattress's 6.5/10 firmness ideal for maintaining proper spinal alignment. The support system keeps hips from sinking too deep while allowing natural lumbar curvature.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers need a firmer surface to prevent hip sinkage and lower back strain. At 6.5/10, the Birch Natural Mattress provides the flat, supportive surface stomach sleepers need. Our testers confirmed minimal hip depression during prone sleeping.
Combination Sleepers
The Birch Natural Mattress's latex construction is naturally springy, so it returns to shape quickly when you switch positions — easier for combination sleepers than memory foam.
Which Birch Natural Mattress Model Should You Buy?
Birch is Helix's natural-materials brand: wool, organic cotton, Talalay latex and steel coils, with no memory foam or polyfoam in the comfort layers. There are three tiers and the differences are comfort-layer thickness, not material.

From the top: organic cotton cover, a wool layer that doubles as the fire barrier, Talalay latex, a second wool batting layer, then individually wrapped steel coils on a natural latex base. The wool fire barrier matters — it means no chemical flame retardants, which is the reason most people shop this category.
Certifications include GOTS on the cotton and wool, GOLS on the latex and GREENGUARD Gold on the finished mattress. That is a stronger certification stack than most 'natural' beds at this price, though Avocado still goes further with full-mattress GOTS certification.
Lab measurements
Cooling: a 3.3°F surface-temperature rise after 60 minutes of loaded contact in our 68°F, 45% RH lab.
Edge support: 1.9 inches of compression under a 230 lb seated load at the perimeter.
Motion transfer: 0.14g peak with a 10 lb weight dropped 12" away.
Pressure relief: 34 mmHg peak shoulder pressure for a 165 lb side sleeper on an XSensor pad.
Response time: 0.5 seconds to fully rebound after release of a 25 lb compression.
Off-gassing: odor gone within a day in a sealed room with a trained sniff panel and a VOC sensor.
Durability: Pass on 30,000 cycles of our rolling load test (about eight years of nightly use).
Measured November 2025 under methodology v2.0.
Re-scored January 2026 under methodology v2.1, when the 30,000-cycle durability simulation was run.
Durability and the honest caveat
At six months our Birch Natural showed 0.25 inches of impression. Latex-and-coil construction is the most durable mainstream architecture and a 25-year warranty is a reasonable reflection of it.
The caveat is firmness. At 6.5/10 the Birch Natural is firmer than most people expect from a $1,249 'plush natural' description, and it does not soften much — latex does not break in the way polyfoam does. If you want a cushioned top, budget for the Luxe rather than planning to add a topper.

How Sleep Sage Evaluates Mattresses
When a mattress enters our lab, our full testing protocol may include pressure mapping, temperature measurements, edge-support testing, motion-isolation testing and other performance measurements. The steps below describe that protocol — they are not a claim that every reviewed product has been through it.
For products labelled Research Evaluation, we have not completed that physical lab protocol. Those reviews are based on verified construction, manufacturer specifications, policies, comparative analysis and available owner feedback.
Lab Tested: This mattress completed our physical testing protocol. The measurements shown below come from that testing.
Panel Testing
For mattresses we physically test, our panel may include sleepers with different body weights, sleep positions and comfort preferences over multiple nights.
Pressure Mapping
For mattresses that enter our lab, our protocol may include pressure mapping to evaluate pressure distribution in side, back and stomach sleeping positions.
Temperature Testing
For lab-tested mattresses, we may track surface temperature with thermal sensors under controlled conditions (68°F room, 45% RH, standard bedding).
Edge & Motion Isolation
For mattresses we physically test, edge support may be evaluated with standardized compression loads, while motion transfer may be measured from a standardized drop at multiple distances.
Durability Simulation
When durability testing is completed, our protocol may apply repeated pressure cycles and compare firmness and support measurements before and after the simulation.
Value Assessment
For every evaluation, our value review may consider verified materials, certifications, warranty terms and current pricing against comparable products in the category.
Editorial independence: Our testing lab operates independently from our affiliate partnerships. Brands cannot pay for higher scores or influence our methodology. Read our full editorial policy and detailed testing methodology.
