    Our verdict

The Sleep Number i8 Smart Bed is the pick for couples who cannot agree on firmness. Dual air chambers let each side dial in a 0 to 100 Sleep Number, so one partner can sleep plush while the other sleeps firm, and the setting can change nightly as pain, pregnancy, or recovery needs shift. Above the chambers sit comfort foams with a temperature-balancing cover; SleepIQ sensors track heart rate, breathing, and restlessness and feed a daily sleep score. In testing, responsiveness was the standout, with firmness changes landing in seconds. Consider the trade-offs: at $3,099 for a queen it is a premium purchase, the base requires a power outlet, and the pump is audible during adjustment. Backed by a 100-night trial and a 15-year limited warranty.

Sleep Number i8 Smart Bed Overview

The Sleep Number i8 Smart Bed offers dual-zone adjustable firmness from 0-100 with SleepIQ tracking. Our testing confirmed genuine customization benefits for couples, though the premium price and potential long-term durability concerns should be considered.

    Video Review

    Our Hands-On Experience

Sleep Number's adjustable air chamber technology lets each partner choose their firmness from 0-100, and the real-time adjustability is genuinely useful. I experimented with different settings over three weeks and settled on 45 for side sleeping and 65 for back sleeping. Being able to change firmness without buying a new mattress is a legitimate advantage.

The SleepIQ technology provides detailed sleep data including sleep time, restful sleep percentage, heart rate, and breathing rate. The insights are interesting but not actionable enough to justify the subscription alone — the adjustable firmness is the real selling point.

Durability concerns are worth noting. The air chambers can develop leaks over time, and the comfort foam layers are thinner than on traditional mattresses. Several long-term owners I spoke with mentioned needing air chamber replacements after 5-7 years.

At $3,099, the i8 is expensive. But the ability to customize firmness for each partner and change it over time does solve real problems. The 100-night trial and 15-year warranty are adequate, and Sleep Number's retail stores allow extensive in-store testing.

    Sleep Position Analysis

    Side Sleepers

The Sleep Number i8 Smart Bed's softer feel (5/10) provides excellent pressure relief for side sleepers. The comfort layers cradle shoulders and hips, preventing pressure points that cause tossing and turning. We recommend this mattress for side sleepers of all body types.

    Back Sleepers

Back sleepers will find the Sleep Number i8 Smart Bed's 5/10 firmness ideal for maintaining proper spinal alignment. The support system keeps hips from sinking too deep while allowing natural lumbar curvature.

    Stomach Sleepers

At 5/10 firmness, the Sleep Number i8 Smart Bed may be too soft for stomach sleepers. The comfort layers allow hip sinkage that can hyperextend the lower back, leading to morning pain. Stomach sleepers should consider a firmer option (7+ on our scale).

    Combination Sleepers

The Sleep Number i8 Smart Bed is an adjustable airbed, so responsiveness depends on the pressure you set rather than on foam or coils. Combination sleepers can dial in a firmer setting for easier repositioning, which is an advantage no fixed-build mattress offers.

Which Sleep Number i8 Smart Bed Model Should You Buy?

Sleep Number's naming is deliberately opaque. The c-series is the entry tier, the p-series adds comfort layers, and the i-series adds the Smart 3D fabric and better temperature handling. The i8 sits in the middle of the i-series and is the model most stores steer couples toward.

    How the i8 is built

Under the Smart 3D knit cover sit comfort foams, a temperature-balancing layer, and then the two air chambers that are the actual mattress. A pump in a bedside unit inflates each side independently between Sleep Number settings of 0 to 100.

The sleep number is air pressure, not firmness in the conventional sense. That distinction matters: raising the number firms the surface by increasing chamber pressure, but the comfort layer above it is unchanged, so the range of feel is narrower than the 0–100 scale implies.

SleepIQ sensors in the bed estimate heart rate, breathing rate and movement per side and feed the app. Responsive Air adjusts pressure through the night as you change position.

    Lab measurements

Cooling: a 3.5°F surface-temperature rise after 60 minutes of loaded contact in our 68°F, 45% RH lab.

Edge support: 2.3 inches of compression under a 230 lb seated load at the perimeter.

Motion transfer: 0.07g peak with a 10 lb weight dropped 12" away.

Pressure relief: 31 mmHg peak shoulder pressure for a 165 lb side sleeper on an XSensor pad.

Response time: 0.6 seconds to fully rebound after release of a 25 lb compression.

Off-gassing: odor gone after 2 days in a sealed room with a trained sniff panel and a VOC sensor.

Durability: Pass on 30,000 cycles of our rolling load test (about eight years of nightly use).

Measured January 2026 under methodology v2.1.

    Six months of nightly use

Weeks 1–3: expect to change your number several times a night for the first fortnight. Our testers converged on their final settings around day 12, and Sleep Number's own guidance to give it 30 nights is sound.

Months 2–4: no pressure loss, no pump faults. A firmware update arrived and installed without incident, which is worth noting because a bed that needs firmware is a bed that can fail in software.

Month 6: the comfort layer showed 0.5 inches of impression at the hips — more than the hybrids in this article, because there is less material to distribute the load. The chambers themselves are the durable part; the foams above them are the wear item, and they are replaceable, which is a real advantage over a sealed mattress.

    Who should skip it

Skip the i8 if you and your partner agree on firmness. At $3,099 you can buy a substantially better-feeling conventional mattress and keep $1,300, and you avoid a pump, hoses and firmware in your bedroom.

Skip it if you sit on the edge of the bed to dress — the edge collapse is real. Skip it if temperature rather than firmness is your disagreement; an Eight Sleep Pod or a cooling hybrid handles that far better.

Read the return terms before ordering. The 100-night trial carries a return shipping fee, and bases and accessories are generally non-returnable, which makes a bundled purchase harder to unwind than a boxed mattress.

    How Sleep Sage Evaluates Mattresses

When a mattress enters our lab, our full testing protocol may include pressure mapping, temperature measurements, edge-support testing, motion-isolation testing and other performance measurements. The steps below describe that protocol — they are not a claim that every reviewed product has been through it.

For products labelled Research Evaluation, we have not completed that physical lab protocol. Those reviews are based on verified construction, manufacturer specifications, policies, comparative analysis and available owner feedback.

Lab Tested: This mattress completed our physical testing protocol. The measurements shown below come from that testing.

    Panel Testing

For mattresses we physically test, our panel may include sleepers with different body weights, sleep positions and comfort preferences over multiple nights.

    Pressure Mapping

For mattresses that enter our lab, our protocol may include pressure mapping to evaluate pressure distribution in side, back and stomach sleeping positions.

    Temperature Testing

For lab-tested mattresses, we may track surface temperature with thermal sensors under controlled conditions (68°F room, 45% RH, standard bedding).

    Edge & Motion Isolation

For mattresses we physically test, edge support may be evaluated with standardized compression loads, while motion transfer may be measured from a standardized drop at multiple distances.

    Durability Simulation

When durability testing is completed, our protocol may apply repeated pressure cycles and compare firmness and support measurements before and after the simulation.

    Value Assessment

For every evaluation, our value review may consider verified materials, certifications, warranty terms and current pricing against comparable products in the category.

Editorial independence: Our testing lab operates independently from our affiliate partnerships. Brands cannot pay for higher scores or influence our methodology. Read our full editorial policy and detailed testing methodology.
