Sleep Number's adjustable air chamber technology lets each partner choose their firmness from 0-100, and the real-time adjustability is genuinely useful. Being able to change firmness without buying a new mattress is a legitimate advantage.
The SleepIQ technology provides detailed sleep data including sleep time, restful sleep percentage, heart rate, and breathing rate. The insights are interesting but not actionable enough to justify the subscription alone — the adjustable firmness is the real selling point.
Durability concerns are worth noting. The air chambers can develop leaks over time, and the comfort foam layers are thinner than on traditional mattresses.
At $3,099, the i8 is expensive. But the ability to customize firmness for each partner and change it over time does solve real problems. The 100-night trial and 15-year warranty are adequate, and Sleep Number's retail stores allow extensive in-store testing.
