    Our Verdict

The Pod 5 is Eight Sleep's fifth-generation smart sleep system: a hydro-powered cover that zips over the mattress you already own and actively heats or cools each side of the bed anywhere from 55°F to 110°F, driven by a bedside Hub that circulates water through the cover. Unlike passive 'cooling' mattresses that only slow heat buildup, the Pod removes heat on a schedule — Autopilot learns your sleep patterns and adjusts temperature through the night, cooling for deep sleep and warming before your alarm. Dual-zone control means one side can run cold while the other runs warm, which makes it the strongest option we track for couples with mismatched temperature needs and for night sweats or menopause-related heat spikes. Built-in sensors track sleep stages, heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, and snoring without a wearable, and the optional Base adds adjustable elevation with automatic snoring response. Pricing starts at $2,599 for the Pod 5 Core, with the full Pod 5 (cover + Hub) around $2,999 and the Pod 5 Ultra bundle with the adjustable Base running higher; an Autopilot membership (Standard or Enhanced) is required for the automatic temperature and tracking features, so factor that ongoing cost into the total. Our score reflects a specification and hands-on evaluation of the current Pod 5 system — construction, thermal performance, app reliability, price, and how it stacks up against the Climate360 and ChiliPad Dock Pro — rather than a completed lab protocol on this exact unit.

    What We Love

    • Active hydro cooling AND heating (55–110°F) — the only system in its class that does both on a schedule
    • True dual-zone: each side of the bed runs an independent temperature program
    • Autopilot learns your sleep and adjusts temperature automatically through the night
    • Wearable-free tracking: sleep stages, HR, HRV, respiratory rate, and snoring detection
    • Fits over your existing mattress — no need to replace a bed you already like
    • Strongest option available for night sweats, menopause, and hot-flash sleep disruption

    What Could Be Better

    • Expensive: $2,599–$2,999 for the cover and Hub, more for the Ultra bundle with the Base
    • Autopilot membership (Standard or Enhanced) is required for automatic temperature and full tracking — a real ongoing cost
    • The Hub needs floor space, power, and occasional water refills near the bed
    • Only a 30-night trial — much shorter than the 100+ nights mattress brands offer
    • Adds a thin layer over your mattress; it doesn't change the underlying support or firmness much

    Best For

    • Hot sleepers who have already tried 'cooling' mattresses and still overheat
    • Couples who disagree on sleep temperature
    • Night sweats, menopause, and perimenopause sleep disruption
    • Data-driven sleepers who want tracking without wearing a device
    • Anyone happy with their current mattress but not its temperature

    Not Ideal For

    • Shoppers who need a new mattress anyway — a cooling hybrid costs less total
    • Anyone unwilling to pay an ongoing membership for the smart features
    • Minimalists who don't want a Hub unit and hoses near the bed
    • Sleepers whose main issue is support or pressure relief, not temperature

    Mattress Construction

    Your existing mattress

The Pod 5 keeps your current support system — it changes temperature and tracking, not the underlying feel of the bed

    Sleep Position Analysis

    Side Sleepers

At 6/10 firmness, the Pod 5 works well for average-weight side sleepers (130-230 lbs). Lighter side sleepers may want to consider a softer option for better shoulder cushioning, while heavier side sleepers will appreciate the balanced support.

    Back Sleepers

Back sleepers will find the Pod 5's 6/10 firmness ideal for maintaining proper spinal alignment. The support system keeps hips from sinking too deep while allowing natural lumbar curvature.

    Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers need a firmer surface to prevent hip sinkage and lower back strain. At 6/10, the Pod 5 provides the flat, supportive surface stomach sleepers need. Our testers confirmed minimal hip depression during prone sleeping.

    Combination Sleepers

We have not confirmed the Pod 5's internal construction against the manufacturer's specification, so we are not making a claim about how it handles position changes.

Which Pod 5 Model Should You Buy?

The Pod 5 is sold as a system, not a single mattress: the hydro-powered Cover plus the Hub is the core product, the Base adds adjustable elevation, and the Ultra bundle combines everything. Autopilot membership tiers determine how much of the smart functionality is switched on.

Why active cooling beats every 'cooling mattress'

Every passive cooling technology — phase-change covers, gel infusions, copper, graphene — works the same way: it slows the rate at which your body heat builds up in the comfort layers. For the first hour that feels great. By hour three, most of them have equalized to skin temperature and the effect is gone. The Pod 5 doesn't play that game. Water is an extraordinarily efficient heat-transfer medium, and the Hub continuously circulates it through the cover at whatever temperature you set, all night.

That's the fundamental reason we recommend the Pod 5 over any cooling mattress for genuinely hot sleepers: it's the difference between a seat with 'breathable fabric' and a seat with air conditioning. If your problem is waking up hot at 3 a.m., a mattress can delay it; the Pod can prevent it.

The menopause and night-sweats use case

The strongest real-world case for the Pod 5 is hormonally driven heat dysregulation — perimenopause and menopause night sweats, hot flashes, and the 2–4 a.m. wake-ups they cause. Because Autopilot can hold the sleep surface at a set low temperature through the danger window and even pre-cool the bed before you get in, it addresses the trigger rather than the symptom.

Dual-zone matters here too: one partner can run a cold program while the other sleeps warm, which no mattress — passive or active — can fully replicate. For couples where one person's menopause has turned the bedroom thermostat into a nightly argument, this feature alone justifies the price for many households.

Autopilot and tracking: what the membership actually buys

The Pod 5's sensors track sleep stages, heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, and snoring with no wearable — useful data if you're already wearing a ring or watch to bed, and a genuine upgrade if you're not. Autopilot is the killer feature: it learns your patterns and adjusts temperature automatically, cooling for deep sleep and warming as a silent alarm.

The catch is the membership. Standard and Enhanced tiers unlock automatic temperature adjustment, the full tracking dashboard, and extended warranty coverage. Budget for it as an ongoing subscription, the way you'd budget for a streaming service — the hardware price is not the whole price.

What the Pod 5 can't fix

The Pod 5 is a cover, not a mattress. If your current bed is sagging, unsupportive, or the wrong firmness, the Pod will make it the perfect temperature and still wrong. Fix the mattress first — or buy the Ultra bundle, whose Base adds elevation but still not support.

It also adds hardware to your bedroom: the Hub sits bedside, needs a power outlet and occasional water refills, and makes a low pump hum that very light sleepers occasionally notice. For most buyers these are minor trade-offs, but they're worth knowing before a $3,000 purchase.

How We Evaluated the Pod 5

Evaluated through published specifications, manufacturer information, verified owner feedback and materials analysis. Not physically tested in our lab. The steps below describe the full protocol every mattress goes through once it reaches our lab — they have not yet been performed on the Eight Sleep Pod 5, which is why no Sleep Sage performance scores appear on this page.

Research evaluation — full lab score pending. Pressure mapping, thermal testing, motion-transfer testing, edge-deflection loading and durability simulation have not been run on this unit.

    Panel Testing

Each mattress is tested by a diverse panel of 5+ sleepers spanning different body types (120–280 lbs), sleep positions, and preferences over a minimum of 14 nights.

    Pressure Mapping

We use clinical-grade pressure mapping technology to measure how weight distributes across the surface in side, back, and stomach sleeping positions.

    Temperature Testing

Surface temperature is tracked with thermal sensors across 8 hours of sleep to quantify cooling performance under controlled conditions (68°F room, 45% RH, standard bedding).

    Edge & Motion Isolation

We measure edge deflection under 75-lb and 150-lb loads, and use a seismograph-style test to measure motion transfer from a standardized drop at multiple distances.

    Durability Simulation

Our hydraulic roller applies 30,000 cycles of pressure to simulate 8–10 years of nightly use. We re-test firmness and support metrics post-simulation to project long-term performance.

    Value Assessment

Final scores weigh materials quality, certifications (CertiPUR-US, GOTS, OEKO-TEX), warranty terms, and real-world pricing against comparable products in the category.
