In our lab we measure edge sinkage as the vertical compression at the mid-side under a 230 lb seated load, taken as the median of three trials. Less sinkage means more of the mattress stays usable.
On our 1–10 scale, 8.5 and above is the bar a mattress has to clear to be ranked on this page at all. Beds scoring 9.5 or higher hold a seated load with very little visible compression, which is what you want if you sit on the edge daily or sleep close to the border.
