Our Verdict
The Stearns & Foster Estate is a handcrafted luxury innerspring from a brand that has been building beds since 1846, and it feels like it: 15 inches tall, cashmere-blend quilting, hand-tufted panels, and IntelliCoil HD, a coil-within-a-coil design that stiffens progressively as more weight is applied. That progressive response is the reason it supports couples with a large weight difference better than single-stage coil beds, and why heavier back sleepers sink through the plush top without bottoming out. Edge support is excellent, so the full sleep surface is usable. It sleeps neutral to slightly warm and, at $2,499 with a 90-night trial, the return window is shorter than online rivals. Retail-only in most markets, so plan to test it in a store.
Our Hands-On Experience
Stearns & Foster has been handcrafting mattresses since 1846 — that's 178 years of continuous production, making them one of the oldest mattress brands in existence. The Estate collection represents their mid-luxury tier, and the craftsmanship is immediately evident. Hand-tufted rosettes, reinforced edges, and cashmere-blend quilting create a mattress that looks and feels like it belongs in a five-star hotel.
The IntelliCoil HD system uses a coil-within-a-coil design that adapts to body weight. Lighter areas (head, feet) encounter softer initial resistance from the inner coil, while heavier areas (hips, torso) engage the outer coil for firmer support. The result is a naturally zoned support system without the rigid boundaries of foam-zoned designs.
White glove delivery is included and the experience was impeccable — delivery professionals in branded uniforms, protective floor coverings, mattress positioned exactly as requested, old mattress removed. For a $2,499 purchase, this level of service is expected but still appreciated.
The 90-night trial and 10-year warranty are my primary concerns at this price. DreamCloud offers a lifetime warranty for $899. While Stearns & Foster's build quality suggests exceptional longevity, the warranty period doesn't match the investment. That said, for those who can test in-store and value traditional American craftsmanship, the Estate delivers a sleeping experience that DTC brands struggle to replicate.
