Support leads, because at higher body weights the support core decides whether the comfort layer can keep working, with measured peak shoulder pressure beside it wherever the model has completed our physical protocol. Every figure comes from the model's record and updates with it.

Most DurableResearch evaluated

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-ProAdapt

Durability 9.6/10 with 9.3/10 support — the pairing that decides whether a bed still performs in year five at a body weight that loads every layer harder.

A medium soft 5.0/10 memory foam build. This model has not completed our physical lab testing protocol, so its scores come from a research evaluation of the manufacturer's published construction rather than pressure-mapping we recorded ourselves.

The TEMPUR-ProAdapt is Tempur-Pedic's mid-range powerhouse, featuring a SmartClimate dual cover system and an additional inch of premium TEMPUR material over the Adapt. Available in soft, medium, medium hybrid, and firm options, it delivers enhanced pressure relief for those who want more than the entry-level but don't need the cooling tech of the breeze° line.

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LUXEbreeze°

Cooling 9.8/10 alongside 9.6/10 pressure relief — sinking further into a surface means more of the body is surrounded by it, so heat matters more at higher body weights, not less.

A medium soft 5.0/10 memory foam build. This model has not completed our physical lab testing protocol, so its scores come from a research evaluation of the manufacturer's published construction rather than pressure-mapping we recorded ourselves.

The TEMPUR-LUXEbreeze° is the pinnacle of Tempur-Pedic's cooling technology. A three-phase system — from the cool-to-touch cover through deep ventilated TEMPUR material — delivers up to 8° cooler sleep. If you love memory foam but hate sleeping hot, this is the endgame.

Vispring Diamond Majesty

The strongest combination of support and pressure relief among the hand-built beds that clear our rules, at $44,000 Queen. Held out of the main ranking because it is not a realistic purchase for most buyers.

A medium soft 5.5/10 innerspring build. This model has not completed our physical lab testing protocol, so its scores come from a research evaluation of the manufacturer's published construction rather than pressure-mapping we recorded ourselves.

The Diamond Majesty is Vispring's answer to the question of what a mattress looks like when cost is removed from the design brief. It stacks three layers of hand-nested calico pocket springs — a configuration almost no other manufacturer attempts because of the labor involved — beneath comfort layers of British fleece wool, Shetland wool, hand-opened Moosburger horsetail, cashmere, and silk. The triple-spring stack does something a single spring layer cannot: the upper layer contours finely to shoulders and hips while the lower layers handle deep support, so the bed is simultaneously softer at the surface and more supportive underneath than any two-layer design we have tested. Starting around $44,000 for the mattress in King (and considerably more with the matching divan), this is a purchase for buyers comparing it against the Hästens 2000T and Vividus, and against a Savoir No. 1. On pure spring sophistication it arguably leads that group; the Hästens counters with superior moisture handling from horsehair, and Savoir with bespoke sizing. It is sold only through Vispring retailers with custom spring-tension selection, and production takes six to eight weeks.

What Changes Above 230 lb

Nothing about side sleeping changes with body weight — the shoulder and hip still carry the load, and the waist still needs filling in. What changes is how far into the mattress that load travels.

  • The comfort layer runs out. A three-inch foam layer that cradles a 150 lb shoulder can be fully compressed by a 250 lb one, at which point the sleeper is resting on the core.
  • The core does the real work. This is why support is the primary ranking factor here rather than pressure relief, which leads our pressure-relief guide.
  • Durability is a comfort issue. Higher load accelerates foam softening, so a bed that measures well in year one can sag into hip misalignment years earlier than the warranty suggests.
  • Edges matter more. Getting in and out is harder on a perimeter that collapses, and heavier sleepers sit on the edge with more of their weight.

How We Measure This

For mattresses that have completed our physical protocol, we pressure-map the side position on an XSensor mat and report peak shoulder pressure in mmHg as the median of three settled readings in our 68°F lab. Lower is better. We also record sinkage in inches and edge sinkage under load, which together show how much of the comfort layer is left once the sleeper has settled.

Our pressure-mapping is performed at a standardised tester weight, so we do not publish readings taken at 250 lb and will not present the figures we do have as if they were. They are one input into the support and pressure-relief scores that drive this ranking, read alongside coil gauge, core density and comfort-layer depth from the manufacturer's specifications.

Models that have not been through the physical protocol carry a research evaluation scored from published construction, never from measurements we did not take. The table and each write-up say which applies, and those models show "Not lab measured" in the pressure column.

Why We Exclude Very Soft Mattresses

Plenty of beds scoring 3.5 to 4.5 on our firmness scale relieve shoulder pressure beautifully — for lighter sleepers. Under a heavier side sleeper the same surface lets the hip drop below the shoulder, which is the misalignment most people describe as lower-back pain from a mattress. That is why eligibility here starts at 5/10 rather than being decided by the score alone. Lighter side sleepers should use our best mattresses for side sleepers guide, where softer beds remain eligible.

If Longevity Is Your Priority

Sustained load is the main reason mattresses are replaced early. Our most durable mattresses guide covers the construction details behind that score.

If You Sleep Hot as Well

Deeper sinkage means more of the body surrounded by mattress, which is why heavier sleepers often run warm on beds that other people find neutral. The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LUXEbreeze° is the coolest-running pick here at 9.8/10. Our best cooling mattresses guide ranks the whole field on temperature.

If You Sit on the Edge

Perching to dress or getting in and out with limited mobility puts most of the body weight on a few inches of perimeter. The Helix Midnight Elite has the strongest edges on this list at 9.2/10. Our best mattresses for edge support guide measures edge sinkage directly.

How This Ranking Is Built

  • Eligibility comes before ranking. A mattress must be currently available, suit side sleeping, sit between 5 and 7.5 for firmness, and score at least 9.2/10 support, 9.2/10 durability and 8.8/10 pressure relief. Kids', youth and travel models are excluded entirely.
  • Support and pressure relief lead, with durability, edge support, cooling and overall score behind them.
  • Price is a real factor. The main ranking is capped at our mainstream price ceiling; exceptional beds above it are recognised separately as the luxury pick rather than taking the top slot.
  • Testing status is stated openly. Lab-tested models carry measured readings; research evaluations are labelled as such everywhere they appear.

Heavy Side Sleeper FAQs

What is the best mattress for a heavy side sleeper?

One with a support core strong enough that a heavier shoulder and hip do not compress straight through the comfort layer, paired with enough contouring that the shoulder still settles. On this page a mattress must score at least 9.2/10 for support, 9.2/10 for durability and 8.8/10 for pressure relief, suit side sleeping, and sit between 5 and 7.5 for firmness before it can be ranked.

How firm should a mattress be for a heavy side sleeper?

Medium to medium-firm, roughly 5 to 7.5 on our scale. Softer beds that suit lighter side sleepers tend to let the hip drop below the shoulder at higher body weights, which is the misalignment many people experience as lower-back pain from their mattress.

Why does durability matter more at higher body weights?

Sustained load accelerates foam softening and coil fatigue, so a bed that measures well when new can develop a hip-height depression years before the warranty period ends. Durability is a comfort issue here, not just a longevity one, which is why it is an eligibility rule rather than a footnote.

Is a hybrid or all-foam mattress better for heavier side sleepers?

Both appear on this list. What matters is the core: pocketed coils and high-density foam cores both hold up, while a low-density polyfoam base does not. Judge the individual model's support and durability scores rather than the category.

Do heavier side sleepers sleep hotter?

Often, because deeper sinkage surrounds more of the body with mattress and reduces airflow around it. If that describes you, weigh the cooling score on this page alongside support, or start from our cooling guide.

Are your pressure readings taken at a heavier body weight?

No. Our pressure-mapping is performed at a standardised tester weight so results are comparable across mattresses, and we do not present those readings as measurements taken at 250 lb. They are one input into the support and pressure-relief scores, read alongside coil gauge, core density and comfort-layer depth.

How we test mattresses for support at higher body weights

Reviews combine hands-on lab evaluation for mattresses we have physically tested and clearly labeled research evaluations based on manufacturer specifications, materials analysis, and verified owner feedback for models we have not.

Deflectometer + spinal-alignment imaging

Protocol: We use a calibrated deflectometer to measure how far the surface compresses under a 50 lb / 100 lb / 150 lb load across the lumbar zone, then photograph each tester from behind using a grid overlay to verify spinal neutrality within 5° of standing posture.

Why it matters: A mattress that lets the hips sag 1.5" deeper than the shoulders forces the lumbar spine into a curve all night — the #1 mechanical cause of morning back pain.

XSensor pressure mapping

Protocol: Subject lies on their dominant side for 5 minutes to allow material to fully conform, then we capture a 60-second average map. We report peak shoulder mmHg (not average) because peak pressure is what causes capillary closure. That single standardized reading — peak shoulder pressure (mmhg) for a 165 lb side sleeper — is the only pressure figure that feeds the v2.1 score. Supplemental to the score, we also map heavier and lighter body types (145 lb, 195 lb, 245 lb) to show how a bed behaves by weight on category pages; those maps are analysis, not score inputs. Anything under 32 mmHg — the capillary-closure threshold — is a passing reading.

Why it matters: Numbness at the shoulder or hip is the single biggest reason side sleepers wake up. Pressure mapping turns that into a measurable number instead of an opinion.

Long-term sleep panel

Protocol: Testing duration varies by product and is stated on the individual review only where our records support it. Sleep Sage does not claim a fixed minimum number of nights for every mattress. Where we held a unit long enough for extended sleep testing, testers matched to the category profile logged morning pain scores and sleep-quality ratings nightly, and that duration is stated on the individual review.

Why it matters: Two beds can post identical lab scores and feel completely different after a real week of use. The panel is what catches the edge cases.

Our full testing protocol is documented at sleepsage.com/how-we-test. We accept review units from brands but pay for any product we keep, and rankings cannot be purchased.
