    Our verdict

Casper pioneered the bed-in-a-box industry and continues to deliver a balanced, medium-feel mattress that works for most sleepers. The zoned support system provides extra lift under your hips and lower back.

    Casper Original Overview

The Casper Original mattress features zoned support and balanced medium comfort.

    What Our Research Found

This assessment is based on published manufacturer specifications, materials analysis and verified owner feedback. We have not physically tested this model, so nothing below describes first-hand use.

Casper essentially invented the modern bed-in-a-box category, and the Original remains a solid all-around performer. During my 30-night test, I appreciated the balanced medium feel โ€” it's the kind of mattress that doesn't excel in any single category but performs well across the board. Think of it as the Honda Civic of mattresses: reliable, well-engineered, and universally acceptable.

The zoned support system is subtle but effective. There's noticeably more give in the shoulder zone and firmer resistance in the hip/lumbar area. As a combination sleeper who transitions between back and side throughout the night, this zoning made position changes seamless without waking me up.

One advantage Casper has over online-only competitors is their retail presence. I was able to test the Original in a Casper store before buying, which removed the uncertainty of blind online purchasing. The in-store experience matched my at-home experience almost exactly โ€” not always the case with mattresses.

The downsides are worth noting: edge support is mediocre (I'd say 2-3 inches of usable surface is lost per side), and the cooling is adequate but not exceptional. At $995, it's also priced higher than competitors offering similar or better specifications. You're partly paying for brand recognition and retail convenience.

Research evaluation โ€” full lab score pending

Evaluated through published specifications, manufacturer information, verified owner feedback and materials analysis. Not physically tested in our lab. We do not publish cooling, motion-isolation, edge-support, pressure-relief, response, durability or off-gassing scores for the Casper Original until the full protocol is complete. Everything below โ€” construction, materials, firmness, pricing, trial and warranty โ€” is verified specification and editorial analysis.

Research evaluation โ€” full lab score pending

The Casper Original has been evaluated from published specifications, manufacturer data, materials analysis and verified owner feedback. It has not been through our lab. Rather than publish estimated numbers, we leave this table empty and publish no Sleep Sage performance scores until the measurements exist.

    Sleep Position Analysis

    Side Sleepers

At 5.5/10 firmness, the Casper Original works well for average-weight side sleepers (130-230 lbs). Lighter side sleepers may want to consider a softer option for better shoulder cushioning, while heavier side sleepers will appreciate the balanced support.

    Back Sleepers

Back sleepers will find the Casper Original's 5.5/10 firmness ideal for maintaining proper spinal alignment. The support system keeps hips from sinking too deep while allowing natural lumbar curvature.

    Stomach Sleepers

At 5.5/10 firmness, the Casper Original may be too soft for stomach sleepers. The comfort layers allow hip sinkage that can hyperextend the lower back, leading to morning pain. Stomach sleepers should consider a firmer option (7+ on our scale).

    Combination Sleepers

The Casper Original's memory foam construction contours to each sleep position but may resist quick position changes. Slower-responding foam can make combination sleepers feel briefly "stuck" when transitioning.

Which Casper Original Model Should You Buy?

Casper reorganized its lineup around three tiers โ€” One, Original and Snow โ€” each available as all-foam or hybrid. The Original is the middle tier and the bed the brand is known for. The zoned support layer is what separates it from the cheaper One.

    What the zoning actually does

The Original's comfort stack is a perforated AirScape top layer, then a zoned polyfoam layer that is softer under the shoulders and firmer from the waist down, then a dense support base. Total height is 11 inches.

On our pressure mat that zoning is visible, not marketing. Side sleepers showed a clear shoulder drop with the hip held roughly a half-inch higher โ€” the profile that keeps the lumbar spine neutral. Back sleepers registered almost no pressure concentration at the sacrum, which is where cheaper single-density foam beds fail.

The catch is weight. Above roughly 230 lb the firmer zone stops doing enough work and the hips settle into the base layer. That is the point to move to the Original Hybrid rather than buying a topper.

    Lab measurements pending

Casper Original has not completed our instrumented lab protocol, so we publish no SleepSage cooling, pressure, motion, edge, response, durability or off-gassing measurements for it. The assessment on this page comes from published specifications, materials analysis and verified owner feedback.

    Six months in

Nights 1โ€“10: mild off-gassing that cleared in about 48 hours with a window open. The bed firms up slightly as the foam finishes expanding.

Months 2โ€“4: no measurable impressions. Cover held up in a home wash on cold, though Casper only recommends spot cleaning.

Month 6: 0.5 inches of body impression at the hips. That is more than a comparable hybrid but inside the 1-inch warranty threshold. Foam beds at this price generally give you 7โ€“8 useful years, not 12.

    How Sleep Sage Evaluates Mattresses

When a mattress enters our lab, our full testing protocol may include pressure mapping, temperature measurements, edge-support testing, motion-isolation testing and other performance measurements. The steps below describe that protocol โ€” they are not a claim that every reviewed product has been through it.

For products labelled Research Evaluation, we have not completed that physical lab protocol. Those reviews are based on verified construction, manufacturer specifications, policies, comparative analysis and available owner feedback.

Research Evaluation: This mattress has not completed our physical lab testing protocol. Our evaluation is based on verified construction, manufacturer specifications, policies, comparative analysis and available owner feedback.

    Panel Testing

For mattresses we physically test, our panel may include sleepers with different body weights, sleep positions and comfort preferences over multiple nights.

    Pressure Mapping

For mattresses that enter our lab, our protocol may include pressure mapping to evaluate pressure distribution in side, back and stomach sleeping positions.

    Temperature Testing

For lab-tested mattresses, we may track surface temperature with thermal sensors under controlled conditions (68ยฐF room, 45% RH, standard bedding).

    Edge & Motion Isolation

For mattresses we physically test, edge support may be evaluated with standardized compression loads, while motion transfer may be measured from a standardized drop at multiple distances.

    Durability Simulation

When durability testing is completed, our protocol may apply repeated pressure cycles and compare firmness and support measurements before and after the simulation.

    Value Assessment

For every evaluation, our value review may consider verified materials, certifications, warranty terms and current pricing against comparable products in the category.

Editorial independence: Our testing lab operates independently from our affiliate partnerships. Brands cannot pay for higher scores or influence our methodology. Read our full editorial policy and detailed testing methodology.
