    Our Verdict

The Matrand is the memory-foam sibling to the Morgedal and the better pick if you sleep on your side. An 8-inch build puts a proper viscoelastic comfort layer over a polyfoam core, which gives you the slow-sinking contour that budget polyfoam beds cannot produce. Motion isolation is genuinely excellent — one of the quietest beds we have tested at any price — so it works well for light-sleeping couples in small apartments. The trade-off is heat: memory foam over solid polyfoam with no coils and no phase-change cover means it runs warm, and hot sleepers should look at the Haugesund spring model instead.

The IKEA Matrand Memory Foam Mattress has been slept on and scored by our testers, but it has not yet gone through the full instrumented protocol — pressure mapping, thermal imaging, motion transfer and edge-deflection loading. Rather than publish estimated numbers, we leave this table empty until the measurements exist.

    • 8 inches is still thin for sleepers over about 230 lb
    • Noticeable off-gassing smell for the first three to five days

    Sleep Position Analysis

    Side Sleepers

At 5.5/10 firmness, the IKEA Matrand Memory Foam Mattress works well for average-weight side sleepers (130-230 lbs). Lighter side sleepers may want to consider a softer option for better shoulder cushioning, while heavier side sleepers will appreciate the balanced support.

    Back Sleepers

Back sleepers will find the IKEA Matrand Memory Foam Mattress's 5.5/10 firmness ideal for maintaining proper spinal alignment. The support system keeps hips from sinking too deep while allowing natural lumbar curvature. Our back-sleeping testers rated this 7.4/10 for support.

    Stomach Sleepers

At 5.5/10 firmness, the IKEA Matrand Memory Foam Mattress may be too soft for stomach sleepers. The comfort layers allow hip sinkage that can hyperextend the lower back, leading to morning pain. Stomach sleepers should consider a firmer option (7+ on our scale).

    Combination Sleepers

The IKEA Matrand Memory Foam Mattress's memory foam construction contours to each sleep position but may resist quick position changes. Memory foam's slower response can make combination sleepers feel briefly "stuck" when transitioning. If you change positions frequently, consider a hybrid alternative.

Which IKEA Matrand Memory Foam Mattress Model Should You Buy?

The Matrand is IKEA's memory foam option, sitting directly against the Morgedal in price and against the Haugesund in feel. It is the softest of IKEA's three mainstream boxed beds and the one to buy if you want contour rather than support.

Memory foam at IKEA prices — what's different

The Matrand uses a genuine memory foam comfort layer, but a thin one. You get the contouring sensation and better pressure relief than the Morgedal, without the deep, enveloping sink of a thick memory foam bed. For side sleepers under about 200 lb that thin layer is enough; heavier side sleepers will feel the firmer base through it.

The trade is temperature. Memory foam holds heat and this one has no gel infusion or phase-change cover to counteract it. Hot sleepers should take the Haugesund spring bed or the Morgedal instead.

    Motion isolation and couples

This is the Matrand's clear win over the rest of the IKEA range. Memory foam absorbs movement, so a restless partner is far less disruptive than on the Haugesund's pocket springs. In a shared bed under $400 that's meaningful.

Edge support is the weak spot, as it is on all IKEA foam beds. Sitting on the edge compresses it noticeably, and couples who sleep to the perimeter of a queen lose usable surface.

    Expansion, smell and lifespan

Give it 72 hours to fully expand and two or three days of airing for the foam smell to clear — memory foam off-gasses more than polyfoam and the Matrand is no exception.

Expect four to five years of nightly adult use before body impressions become noticeable. The 10-year limited warranty covers defects and impressions past a specified depth, not the gradual softening that ends most mattresses' lives.

Coming off a spring bed that murdered my shoulder. This actually lets it sink. Only complaint is warmth in summer — we run a fan now.

Genuinely the quietest mattress I have owned. She works early shifts and I no longer notice.

    Warm. Very warm.

Great pressure relief, but I sleep hot and by 3am I am on top of the covers. If you run hot, skip it.

How We Tested the IKEA Matrand Memory Foam Mattress

Every mattress we review goes through our rigorous, multi-step evaluation process. Here's exactly how we arrived at our scores for the IKEA IKEA Matrand Memory Foam Mattress.

    Panel Testing

Each mattress is tested by a diverse panel of 5+ sleepers spanning different body types (120–280 lbs), sleep positions, and preferences over a minimum of 14 nights.

    Pressure Mapping

We use clinical-grade pressure mapping technology to measure how weight distributes across the surface in side, back, and stomach sleeping positions.

    Temperature Testing

Surface temperature is tracked with thermal sensors across 8 hours of sleep to quantify cooling performance under controlled conditions (72°F room, standard bedding).

    Edge & Motion Isolation

We measure edge deflection under 75-lb and 150-lb loads, and use a seismograph-style test to measure motion transfer from a standardized drop at multiple distances.

    Durability Simulation

Our hydraulic roller applies 30,000 cycles of pressure to simulate 8–10 years of nightly use. We re-test firmness and support metrics post-simulation to project long-term performance.

    Value Assessment

Final scores weigh materials quality, certifications (CertiPUR-US, GOTS, OEKO-TEX), warranty terms, and real-world pricing against comparable products in the category.
